I grew up in the US and now i live in Europe so i can see both side of the spectrum....

During the colonial times the right to bear arms was a must due to the fact that if the government ever decides to turn on its people, its people will fight back.

Now adays i still support the right to bear arms because you dont know whats going to happen any more you cant trust anyone. if a person in front of you has a gun and is trying to rob you thats when the right to bear arms comes along....

From the European side they see us as a destructive nation willing to destroy anything and everything until we have our way.....

I still say lets get the guns, and go for a BBQ!!!

The funny thing is this ruling might help me in a lawsuit I was thinking about starting and will give me an actual argument. I probably won't win, but I've been seriously considering suing the government over several laws (in several states) and right now I'm waiting for the right attorneys, especially since the legal fees will be insane (possibly in the millions).

What do the changing times have the slightest bit to do with changing the rights we hold as citizens. I don't know if you have forgotten or if you never even knew that is what made this country what it is. Now things are slowly starting to change for the worst.

The thing that made America what it is today is that the people hold the power and not the gov't. Now that is changing and the power is starting to shift if not has already. That is the reason we have that "stupid" document.

I don't think you have any idea what you are talking about to be honest. I believe if you lived in the U.S. you may understand but you don't. Or do you? Well with that response I sure hope not.

What the hell does hunting have anything to do with this either? Have you ever actually been hunting? I seriously doubt you ever have if you think the majority hunt with ak's and uzi's, that is just plain ignorant.

The right to bear arms wasn't put in place so people could go hunting haha.

if you believe your government protects you better than yourself can, you should know there are a lot of countries where ppl are not allowed to bear guns and they have a lot less liberties than us citizens and criminality is higher. i would never give my liberty for my "protection".

I have lived overseas and I found that, on the whole, most people really do not understand the fundamental protections the U.S. Constitution provides and the continued relevance of this ancient document to us today. Even in the UK, with the Magna Carta, they don't understand it completely.

The people here in the U.S. who complain about privacy and speech violations have no clue that there are no such protections in other countries. Just look at the ability of the UK government to supress the press in the interest of national security reasons and the lawsuits in France and Germany against individual citizens solely because they expressed unpopular sentiments or even downright ugly views. That just can't happen here. Or at least if it does, there is something we can do about it under our system of laws.

I emphatically disagree with this comment. Our Constitution is what our freedoms are based on and without them we would be come another EU. Just another ankle biting chihuahua, all bark and no bite. Who's owners kick in the teeth and toss a bone to and call it "democracy". No thanks..

Some people asked Benjamin Franklin after the signing of the DOI what he and the others had given them, he replied "We have given you a Republic, IF you can keep it!" So far we've lost the Republic because we let dumb asses change the Constitution take our liberties away gradually and now were facing world crisis because there are have been Constitutional laws subverted into a "modern age" Oligarchy.

You have to understand that our forefathers didn't start partying after the war was over --- they were scared shitless! They knew that if we lost the Republic that some would be despot could start the entire process over again. That is exactly why they created the Constitution - and it should NOT be changed. We are following the Constitution less and less all the time as it gets torn to shreds by despots running the country today and our freedoms are disappearing at an alarming rate.

Understand what a Republic is .. it is NOT a democracy thats the last thing our Forefathers wanted and feared. They knew that it would be the end of America as they hoped for us if it was changed from a Republic to a Democracy.

As for the gun laws --
This is only one battle, the war isn't over by a long shot. Bush as made it possible by executive orders to completely circumvent "Posse Comitatus" and you saw evidence of this as the military went door to door and collected guns from citizens NOT ONLY in New Orleans but other neighboring cities after katrina. It was not legal and it was a big blow to Americans rights to bear arms and it was a test on the American public to see how easy it would be to get Americans to give up their rights to own guns.

All it would take today to get those guns -- is for Bush to attack Iran - call it an emergency and declare martial law. If you think that is a stretch -- I'd say you don't know what happened on the 26th of this month. Actually he doesn't even need to attack Iran -- we just need a crisis -- like a monetary crisis...

The problem is that "Most" Americans have never had to defend their freedoms to the death as our forefathers did. So many of them don't understand the cost or the purpose and have no idea of what that takes to commit to that level. That's about to change...

I think Ron Paul said it best .. "These are exciting but very dangerous times we live in today."

The right to bear arms is the right to get shot at. Coming from a country where guns are banned and the only carriers are criminals (police in general are not armed) and only licensed shotguns are allowed.

The result is generally a safer society most gun crime remains gang related and it is thankfully still rare. When death stops being news worthy you have problems I don't imagine DC deaths even make the papers.

Unless people are trained to use weapons the right to bear them is still an issue with using them. Remember no one is trained to injure but kill. I am guessing but 90% of people who shoot some one still get charged with murder or something.

So the right as a principle is fine but using them just lands you in jail or dead. Great choices?

The constitution is 200 years old when things were different maybe it should be updated for the 21st century? But that is not likely to happen lawyers make to much money to change things.

As you probably guessed I am not US and my opinions count for squat but I love heated debate!
