I was kind of fed up with the high prices of AWS, Digital Ocean, and Linode, and I decided to try something new. Guess what? I saw Namecheap offering VPSes. What a surprise (not for you guys I know lol)!

So, I thought I would give it a try. I did give it a try and had some projects set up there. Here's what I found...

The Good:

6GB ram, 4 CPU cores, 120 GB SSD, and 3TB bandwidth for $15.88 a month ( I went with monthly pricing. Yearly should be cheaper but I don't want to commit to it yet) is insane pricing. Digitalocean for example sells 2cpu cores, 4GB RAM, 4TB bandwidth, and 80GB SSD for $24 a month. Other providers that I am used to, have more or less the same pricing.

There is no setup fee, which is good (some providers do charge you a setup fee which is stupid).

The Bad:

Setup is not instant. It takes a couple of hours for the setup. I am assuming they set up the VPSes manually? This is where providers like DO and AWS EC2 shine.

I also did not see any option to choose the server location, which is bad for deploying real-world systems.

Additionally, I wish the pricing was hourly. That way, it is cheaper to spin up a new instance whenever needed and delete it after use (you can do this with AWS/DO).

The Ugly:

I am an ubuntu fanboy. I can't live without it lol. Unfortunately, NC VPSes do not come with Ubuntu 22.10/22.04 out of the box. You can't even do-release-upgrade normally. I had to do some modifications to make it work and it took me 30 mins or so. I was finally able to get the latest 22.10 edition and get everything set up. This means that it will be a pain to do auto-deployment on (let's say using ansible).

Verdict:

If you are looking for a cheap and reliable (I guess I will find out soon lol) VPS provider, NC can be a good option. However, it is not really suitable for more advanced deployments, at least not yet.

Good analysis. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Lately I have been reading some mixed reviews about Namecheap. So I have had a mixed feeling about them.
But when such reviews come in then it becomes easier to make buying decisions.

My pleasure. Thank you for reading. :)

It's a good choice and a reliable company.
Similar to this I've just received from their New Year promo email

Looks pretty good! I see that it also has snapshots which is a plus. Will give it a try soon. Thanks for the recommendation. :)

Do they have snapshot? Also the pricing seems too good. I wonder how much they charge for yearly.

I did not see an option for snapshot unfortunately (for me it doesn’t matter much because I use docker and I backup the persistent data regularly, automatically ofcourse). The yearly pricing is like 12.xx. Forgot the exact amount.

4 CPU Cores and 8 GB RAM. $8.49 / month
Contabo's pricing is insane.
No setup fees? That should be pretty good if so. Will have a look. :D

I was leaving Namecheap last year because when I am using their hosting most time google doesn't crawl the website. Now when I am seen they provide new attend, I really interested. And thank you for sharing this information.

You might want to give a try to Contabo,
It's deadly cheap compared to other alternatives and the hosting is pretty good as well

Almost 2 months into the setup, and zero problems till date. Server kept running smoothly. I must say I am impressed with namecheap this time. ;)

That's odd. Did you try putting it behind Cloudflare?
