In 2017 or so I had created a blog in WordPress and had a few thousand accesses per month.
What caught my attention was that every day I received several comments in English saying that the post was very good and bla bla bla.
What I didn't know was that this would create a backlink from my site to theirs, I only found out later when I started researching about SEO.

My question is this: How do they publish these comments on thousands of blogs? Is it automatic with some bot or manually?

But on a programming level how does this work?
Because I already tried brute force posting a comment on a WordPress blog and each access had a unique hash that is validated by the backend.
Or do they simply emulate a browser?

Similar tools like scrapebox can do it. These tools scrape websites that allow posting comment and then post your links as comment. So you have mass backlinks. But nowadays, almost websites don’t allow spam comments.

In this day and age there are not many blogs were you could post your comments. Maybe using software will help you identify many blogs where you could leave comments.

It can be assumed that blogs that allow spam comments are sites without any value and probably forgotten by their author.

Xrumer, Scrapebox, GSA etc. Blog comments tend to be the easiest source of links to script, but nowadays most new blogs are not auto-approve and so submissions have to get past the roadblock of the blog author/admin.

First thing is many blog owners have become smart enough not to leave their comment section with auto approved enabled. They will monitor the comments and will straight delete your spam comment. I do this to clean up the junk in my sites regularly.

Secondly, blog comments hold a very less importance in Google eyes. There is no point in using a software or tool to do it. It may backfire.

Thirdly, even if you have to do it, do it manually and try to add value in other peoples blog with your useful insights. I do this sometimes. Whenever I come across any good article I leave a detailed feedback with my suggestions for improvement and my views on the article. This makes the site owner realize that I have ACTUALLY read their content and they are happy to approve my comment with link since I have added some real value in their site.
