Being active in conversations of hot posts in those subreddits.
Replying to the top voted comment as quick as possible as the discussion starts. Something witty/funny or just supporting the post will work to get upvotes.

Hi, if your aim is to grow karma I would recommend going to one of the big subs, repost a post that got a lot of karma (from 1y+ ago) and send some upvotes to it just to make sure you get enough visibility to start rolling, this is sure to give you great results
