Nowadays, paid themes are almost free with the amount of GPL sites out there. If you are going to be serious with WP, pick one GPL site and move from there.
If you consider the amount of Premium Magazine options also, then you will be served

How can anyone be sure if a GPL site is legit? They can always modify the files right?
You mean customizing a free theme to look like a paid magazine theme? Any tutorial video showing that?

You can't. You must choose some GPL legit site and trust the author of such. Don't pick a random site you have found over Google by searching for it, or it will have malicious code with a 99% of probability.
