I just got my first copyright strike.. and it's false. I make gaming content, some videos have my voice, some videos don't. I do not show my face. The guy who is responsible for the strike plays the same game as I do, our content is VERY different. My videos are high quality, probably 9/10 and his videos are laggy low resolution streams with his face in a corner - 2/10. It's obvious that I did not use his content. On his channel he does not have videos even remotely similar to the one that was striked.

I'm not trying to judge here, but I watched some of his videos and it seems like the person in question might have some mental health issues and I'm saying this unironically. I do not think it is possible to solve this by talking, for the reason I mentioned before and the fact that he knew I did not use his content and he did this maliciously.

What would be the best approach to deal with this and get the strike removed?

Did he copyright claim for reused content?
Your best bet would be to try to contact YouTube with evidence preferably making a video about it with your voice, making it private, so they can see it and confirm there is a real person that puts time and effort into this channel.
Gather some evidence, as long as your content really is unique I believe that you will be okay.

it's a dirty world
like @Richichi said you can appeal but google's not known to be in favor in most cases
ive had this happen to me in terms or dmca requests (not youtube related). i just kept pushing out good content. eventually the corrupted competitor gave up and quit trying to compete (took a few months).

The reasoning was not given. It was manually claimed by that guy.. there was no attempt to get the revenue from the video, it was simply an attempt to get the video taken down to ruin my day, so his day would be better.. I don't even know the guy. Apparently he's been on YouTube since 2010 and my channel outgrew his in less than a year, I think that might be the reason that got him upset. It's a shame YouTube does not have any meassures in place to prevent situations like this.

I hope that you will get through this, it can be a little demotivating but don't let that stop you.
Some people can't stand to see the success of others
Try your best to contact youtube and try to get this resolved but don't accuse him of doing it on purpose, give them a good comparison and say that he might of accidentally overlooked it and act as if you don't really understand why you are getting this copyright claim because you are recording, editing everything by yourself.

About 4 hours after getting the strike the traffic that I was getting to my videos crashed completely. YouTube was heavily pushing my videos for a few days and I was getting the most exposure that I ever got.. and then it crashed 4 hours after getting the strike. Has anyone been in a similar situation? I suspect it might be related to me getting the strike..

All you have to do is convey your objection to the other party. You have no choice but to intimidate the other party. Some nasty guys don't want others to win, they post fake copyrights. Stupid people

dispute or contact youtube on twitter explaining everything.

File a dispute or if the channel is monetized use chat support and explain them about this wrong copyright claim, tell them all the videos are created by you in 720/1080/4k quality the person wrongly claimed have no such video quality in his channel

Are you using any watermarks or logos in exported videos?

Your doesn't need to be monetized for you to use the live chat on YouTube now. I have less than 100 subscribers on a channel and I'm still getting help live on my yt studio from YouTube support

your account may have some other channel enabled for monetization without ypp youtube don't provide chat support

My account doesn't have any monetized channel but I have channel that's monetized on another Google account

UPDATE

My views crashed completely..

I'm fighting this back.. I submited a counter notification which is under review now. The common sense says that this should be decided in my favor as there's a very noticeable difference in the content that we produce.

I was not. My channel was not getting that much exposure. I did not think that something like this could happen.. I might have to start using them.

Did you Use Voiceover in the video on which you got strike?
It was a cutscene from a video game. I don't talk over cutscenes not ruin the viewing experience. The quality of my videos and his videos differs so much, you would think he ripped off my videos and messed up in the process, not the other way around.

if you have linked gmail account / youtube account as manager in another monetized account then the chat feature will be enabled

This is natural when there is a copyright issue channel video reach will be reduced it will get back to normal if the strike expires/removed

Use watermarks text or logos its the best way to avoid such copyright abuse
