Asus laptops are pretty dependable.Next year I'm going to start a software engineering degree. Currently, I have a desktop and have no idea about laptops. My budget is around $1000.
@Suresh Dananjaya I strongly DON'T recommend getting a Macbook on M1, or any M* processor as that would put you on an ARM architecture which will be unlike x86-based architectures that you'll be studying. You will face immense issues if you're ever to attempt to install a *nix OS on your latest fancy Macbook with dual-boot and the alternative is to struggle with a lagging VM which isn't fun either.Get a m1 macbook air/mini may be. Should do your job fine, speaking from experience.
Wait, what? No! As for Linux, VMWare fusion works just fine (You can install ubuntu arm64 on it. Tested). As for the course itself, Linux is not necessary at all. Everything that is taught in a cs degree course can be run on windows and mac as well. No idea where you get these stats from lol. In fact, if you really wanted to dual boot Linux with mac, you could use Asahi Linux, but it's still beta stage so I don't recommend it at this moment (GPU acceleration still does not work. Get a good machine that comes with Windows (more on that later), a Thinkpad is a good choice, it's beloved by professionals for a good reason. Can't afford a new one? Get a pre-owned one (with SSD). Assuming that not all of your lectures are going to be computer science related you might encounter the need for using legacy programs that run only on Windows but you'll aslo need to install a *nix system as that will come in handy for your programming and OS lectures.

The guy will likely be studying UNIX-focused OS classes anyway because the CS field is biased towards *nix and running what everybody else is running will help.As for the course itself, Linux is not necessary at all. Look, I can't disagree with you that you can manage everything running on an M1 Macbook but why would you make yourself jump through all of these hoops when you could get a machine that does everything you need from the get-go? Well, let’s agree to disagree. That’s fine. I have been a windows/linux user for a long time. I still do use linux heavily in my job, but as servers. I would prefer using mac as my desktop, as it has everything I need, and I don’t have to spend days scratching my head and fixing stuffs. Even the file structure is unix like (which is no surprise, as it was developed as an unix clone to begin with) which makes me comfortable.
