Does Having too Much Do-follow External Links Reduce Website Link Juice?

Maybe this is also one of the reasons why high authority sites don't give away do-follow backlinks easily. But, I haven't found any research about this... What do you guys think?

If you're talking about having do-follow links from your site to other sites, then yes there will be a net loss in terms of link juice or whatever you want to call it circulating around your site. Usually it will trickle through your internal links and not flow through nofollowed external links, but if the external links are do-follow then some of that juice will be sent to the page on another site you're linking to. At least that's how the original PageRank algorithm works.

The most important thing in external links is not to go overboard with the number of dоfollow links, because you can get over-spam. Often site owners put nofоllow to their site did not put links, as this will reflect badly on their site

If you have a page and every paragraph has an external link, then the total value of the link juice going out from that page is reduced tremendously.

I believe Matt Cutts published a formula for link juice distribution several years back.

Keep in mind that just because you no-follow a lot of your links on a page doesn't mean that the existing do-follow outgoing links will pack more SEO power.

Google made sure to fix that "hack" many years ago.

What solution do you have left?

Just be disciplined in how you link out.

You should only link out when absolutely necessary.

How do you know that you should link out?

Well, if you are sure that the external page that you're linking to will somehow someway enhance the content of the page you're linking from, then you can link.

Otherwise, if you're linking to a completely unrelated page or following some sort of cookie-cutter or formula-driven linking pattern, you're probably wasting your time.
