They are good for diversification. If you have only the do follow links , it will look like spam to Google.

No-follow back-links don't produce juicy links, but if no-follow links are from high authority sites it can increase traffic of your website.

this is just a myth, google knows this trick too.
spammy links just won't count, and won't result penalty, otherwise your competitors will spam your website all day long.
penalty is only for purchasing expensive links, because there's a good chance your competitor won't spend too much sending you links he's not sure will hurt you.
in my niche in my local language i have competitors and they buy every few days.. realy every week from all newspaper link building.. this is last 2 years and google not make nothing.. they rank 1-2-3 place..
