[ADVICE] EDU GOV Redirects - Good or Bad ?

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can settle an argument for me... I have a collection of EDU and GOV backlinks that redirect to my website. I'm sure you've seen hundreds of these over the years.

Example below:

http://sc.sie.gov.hk/TuniS/www.mydomain.com

http://ezproxy.cityu.edu.hk/login?url=http://www.mydomain.com

Some SEO providers suggest that these redirects are useful for any backlink strategy, and some suggest they are a waste of time and provide no real benefit.

Has anyone benefited from these redirects or am I wasting my time.

they don't have ranking power, but they don't harm your site, either. I mean, if you get millions of them and nothing else it could raise a flag to google that something's wrong with your site, and this could lead to your site being penalized (de-ranked, or even de-indexed), But only a handful of them when you have other, more powerful links, are not dangerous

How do people do this? To be able to get a redirect backlink from an EDU or some other site like that?

every page, even redirect page (not auto redirect) has ranking power, if it gets juice from the outside, e.g., backlinks set to it.

This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the search term you are targeting. For example, if you are targeting an edu term with a government site you could be in a good position. However, if you are targeting a government term with an edu site you will not be in a good position.
