Any keyword research tips?

I am trying to do niche marketing recently and keyword research is probably the most important. I have been using Keyword Elite and some free keyword tools like Google Adwords Keyword Tool, Free Wordtracker tool and SEObook tool. However, I am not really sure how to do the keyword research. I just know that I have to find a main keyword and many long tail keywords that have hign demand and low supply. But I really have a lot of problems with that. So anyone here can help me?

What do you use as a gauge? I think that's the most important aspect of selecting keywords. We all do different things with the keywords, but once you experiment and begin to understand what you can rank for using your personal methods, it gets a lot easier.

If you are just starting out, I'd suggest picking terms with low, low competition. Like less then 5,000 competing in google. That will make it a lot easier for you to succeed.

You can always guess what a popular keyword could be for a given niche. Just enter that keyword in anyof the tools you are using and it will give you related keywords and their demand patterns. Select the keywords that have a moderate search volume but low competition.

If you are not sure which keywords to go for just find a authority website in your niche (your competitor website) - enter the website URL at SEOdigger.com - You will find the keywords for which the website ranks at top in Google. Then you can do keyword analysis for those keywords to see which keywords you can dominate with least efforts.

I would prefer to do niche blogging that aims my country's market which is in Malaysia. However, all the keyword research tools are based upon mostly US and other European countries.

Sometimes I manage to find a good small niche. However, the profitability in that niche is almost zero, meaning no affiliate program and no targeted Adsense ads. Besides, how can I actually market in that niche if I am completely new to it?

It is all about testing.

Long tail keywords at great low prices don't usually appear in keyword tools... you have to think like a customer and expand main keywords using your own creativity.

I usually go to ezinearticles and see the headlines (or even skim through the articles) to get ideas on what a buyer might type into the search engine when they are ready to purchase something.

From there on, you need to test the market... there is no magic to marketing, you can copy others method but in the end your data is the one that will lead you to what you need to do.

Exactly

The keyword tools are just that... a tool... a tool will only will help you so far, the rest is up to each individual.

Usually, I use such software to get the basic ideas and then expand them using my own creativity and research.

You can use those keywords pulled by such software if you can take the heat of the competition or planning to test market with zero competition.

Study have shown that everyday there are almost half a million new keywords being entered for the first time... So, to tackle the long tail market you have to think like a customer.

It is really up to you.

Although, I love hard job.... that means it could be more profitable as most people will shun away from such thing.... or, you can outsource the difficult task too

Yeah, like I suggested, you can go for the niche... then you have to focus well on your marketing, landing page, adcopy, etc, etc.

It is not really difficult doing keyword research once you get the hang of it...

In fact, I find that keyword research is the easiest to do, the main bulk of the work is usually in the setting up of your campaign and marketing it.

1) SEO for your webpages/website? (Wordtracker is good, keyword elite and seo elite work good too, I believe, but I've never used these 2, also there is the trellian keyword tool)

2) A pay per click (PPC) campaign using google adwords, yahoo search marketing etc? (e.g. Adwords keyword tool by google, adwords analyzer etc.)

3) For spying on competitors doing PPC (e.g. to "steal" their keywords and ads) - I believe Undercover Profits; Zamdoo.c0m, and SpyFu are some tools that help you with this.

4) Assessing demand for the keywords in a niche so that you can prep content off-site e.g. write keyword rich articles and post to ezine directories or to create keyword rich blogger pages with back links to your sales website etc.? (Back to Wordtracker for this one, I guess)

If I understand it correctly, the approach toward keyword research and the actual keyword tools that you would use, might be different, depending on the purpose of your research.

Would love to hear what you and the other members think about all this, as well as any of your experiences with other keyword research tools (I'm sure there are tons of others that I don't know about or have never heard of ).

I think my research will involve everything that you have mentioned. But currently, I am working on finding a niche. Keyword Elite is quite sophisticated for me so I sometimes got frustrated with it.
