Linux Ubuntu VPS problem: please help

I use Windows on my local computer. Successfully login to my new Linux Ubuntu VPS via Putty SSH client, this is what I see on the screen:

But how can I see the real user-friendly Linux interface like this without changing the OS of my local PC to Linux:

You will need to install GUI and something like xrdp for that.

Xrdp is laggy on Ubuntu, even on localhost. You are better off with windows

If this is a high config vps, you can mail contabo team they will install window for you and tell them you have the product key you will activate it later.

I did it several times to save costs of paying everymonth for windows and the extra cost for windows server. The total cost went down from 1600$ to approx 1200$ but those were high end vps or i think dedicated server. You need to confirm.

In your case you just installed the UBUNTU CLI version, you can try requesting them to install ubuntu GUI version sometimes they do, if you are an old customer. Contabo is really good at support, if you are big customer.

You can try xfce/ gnome with xrdp, the experience ain't that great. There is noVnc, which is same. And if it is contabo VPS (not VDS), they have limit on IOPS.

Like I said, Windows is best bet for RDP. Even with high latency, it just works!

Or you can simply grab a trial AWS/ DO account from marketplace if you don't need it consistently.
Or find another provider, who can offer trial license, which works for 180 days and you can reinstall after that

Yeah, I prefer Debian as well, and have Macbook for everyday use. I have one windows vps idle for some apps which are windows specific.

Try with noVnc or x2go, they are okayish. Then there is apache guacamole as well.

Yes, I want to host websites on it. I have done website hosting on Windows VPS before and I don't see any reason why this would not work on Linux. The similarity here is that I want a GUI on Linux, that's it.
I am not that techie of a person, but I have read people successfully host websites like this.

I can sFTP into my Linux with WinSCP. I did that already, a bit of a few minutes learning curve there. But hey, I am more of a visual, graphical person who likes interfaces or panels. So I want to see in real-time how the objects or files I had sFTPed seats on my Linux machine. Yes, I simply like to see my computer right in front of me like a real computer, not like some bot.

In fact, I am planning to easily install DirectAdmin or something on it, not necessarily with some command line and prompt of which I have no idea where all those codes go, what I had installed or not already installed. Lol. My point is, to minimize the risk of messing around with codes.

DirectAdmin is a good alternative to cpanel on budget.
But I just use a control panel that's free like cyberpanel, Cloudflare for DNS and SSL.
For mailing Cyberpanels mail server or an external SMTP.
And yes, backups are important since it's unmanaged VPS.

I'm actually planning to Install Mailwizz + Powermta as SMTP on it, 'cause I have a good experience with Mailwizz for sending emails.

Tho I haven't find a free DirectAdmin alternative that's not buggy like Cyberpanel for web hosting. It must have the following spec:

1- Have a file manager like DirectAdmin
2 - Allows you to set up cron jobs
3 - Support Litespeed.
4 - Can easily access pubic_html and upload files in there (root directory)
5 - In DirectAdmin, you can see your File manager, clickc click it. Go to wp-content, click and see your themes and plugins folder, edit the codes of each plugin, make changes to the code of htacc and function php etc. The panel must have this.

It does not matter how much your VPS configs are powerful even on 16 or 32GB RAM capacity of Ubuntu machine, loading it from Xrdp or XFCE is always lagging. From a personal perspective, what is your backend application installed on the ubuntu instance? Is that a Linux-based application? In that case, my suggestion would be that you should harden your skills with Linux terminals.

But again if you just wanted it for hosting purposes, and wanted to access it in the GUI way, switch to the Windows server and access it as a VDI by RDP.

So I somehow was able to learn basic Linux command, Got GUI configured, RDP my way into the server via Microsoft Remote Desktop, setup DirectAdmin on the Ubuntu server, migrated my two sites on it.

Now working on Mailwizz installation. My developer is setting up this one.

I think I am developing a positive midset towards Ubuntu now. And the running of codes, command lines in action is actually fun. Not that difficult and scary as it used to be in the last 24 hours. Lol. Only requires a hell of time to learn and read a few doc here and there online. I'm loving Putty SSH..
