I hire on upwork. It already does the screening nicely based on reviews.

Inmost of the cases I hire content writers as a VA. I find them on platforms like Fiverr, Upwork and worknhire, etc. It takes some time to build a good professional relationship though and it all depends upon how you communicate with them.
I assure them of the regularity of the work and timely payment and if needed, I do not hesitate to deposit funds upfront so that they are assured of my work ethics.
Today there are over 15 writers working with me and have a good rapport with me, many of them have been associated with me for over 8+ years.
For me it's all about maintaining cordial humanly relationship, work is done automatically

Good question.
It started with Fiverr and lasted for many projects and payments was done via Fiverr only. But after working on many projects together we have each others contact details. Now its outside of Fiverr.

The main purpose here is to identify the right candidate for your task. You need to choose the right one. I have seen clients praising the same VA who struggled with the previous one.

I would recommend Upwork as there's no long-term commitment. I pay close attention to earnings and job success scores.

I hire a lot of people on Upwork. I look at reviews and read all the negative ones. I stay away from anyone with negative feedback around communication, or running up time. Ghosting and bad communication is the number 1 issue with contractors.
On occasion I will hire a contractor with not much work history if their English is good and their rate is low. You can get good deals from contractors starting out on the platform looking to build their profiles.
But the number 1 rule when hiring contractors as the old saying goes is to “hire fast, fire fast, and look after the good ones” If someone’s work isn’t right or they mess you around just end their contract and move on to the next one.
