I have changed from BlueHost to Cloudways and have been happy ever since.
if you are not an IT guru, it works great and you can scale it vertically according to how much capacity you need.
They just don't work as registrar, which is why I still keep my BlueHost account.

If you need something very fast and light, go for a Vultr High Frequency Compute VPS ($6/Month] combined with RunCloud.io ($8/Month) with their Nginx cache, use CloudFlare DNS only. BadAss speed at very low cost. It does not get much faster then this combo.

Ideally get a VPS like DigitalOcean or Vultr. These are the best in their class. But you'll get bare metal servers so you're responsible for setup and maintenance. You need Linux sysadmin skills or hire someone who knows.
Cloudways is my recommendation because you'll get the benefits of a VPS but without the technical skills. They will give you a control panel where you can spin up a server, install applications, etc. You can choose a DO, Vultr, Linode or GCP server.
Runcloud and Serverpilot are quite similar to Cloudways as they're cloud panels. But you have to buy from DO or Vultr first and then set it up for Runcloud/Serverpilot. A little bit more technical than Cloudways which is just a few clicks to spin up a server.

Kinsta is great because it is fast and there is no server admin work involved. Since you don't want to use them, Cloudways is likely the next best option.
Going cheap usually just ends up meaning you're going to have to dump time into troubleshooting at an unexpected time in the future. Do you really want to spend a couple of hours fixing package dependencies or searching for what settings need to be changed in a random configuration file somewhere?
Cloud hosts don't provide an e-mail server. MXroute is cheap and has worked well for me.

I'm currently with Digital Ocean and Beeks Financial Cloud, would recommend both. I am currently testing Oracle Cloud but I'm not entirely sold at the moment, they just don't offer more than Digital Ocean. I use PaperSpace on a very limited basis if I need GPU power.
Previously I was with Vultr but they initially have a 5 VM limit and you have to send a message to increase. At that point, they wanted detailed descriptions of everything I do with the VM's. After explaining that I do financial forward testing for various currency and cryptocurrency markets, with the only data transfers going between me [Vultr] and Equinix NY4 and no public traffic, they kept insisting on more details. Well, at that point I went elsewhere as I understand they need to protect their business, but I also need to protect mine and I'm not going to explain every detail of my work to a company so I can get a VM. It's not like I don't have hundreds, if not thousands, of other options including just running my own servers in house.
Before that was MediaTemple, they were and from what I've heard still are good. But they are pretty pricey, I did like the instant scaling of resources which at the time wasn't commonplace. I have used AWS from time to time but they're pretty pricey too. I have an account with LiquidWeb but I don't even remember the last time I used them.

Im looking into WPX but have concerns that sub domains count against overall site count on their sites.
Cloudways is an option but their asking for all my ID to signup, which is strange.
Its important that support will help with wordpress issues, if any but not all. I can take care of most.
However running my own VPS is a nightmare due to time commitments with unexpected issues.

I find BuyVM slightly overrpiced for what they offer (compared to Hetzner, Contabo, and as you mentioned HostHatch).
But the DirectAdmin licence is definitely a dealbreaker for the lowend plans. I wonder which level of DA licensing they are offering.
