Like most here, I spend close to 7 plus hours a day looking at my screen and have tried many things to combat eye strain/fatigue.

  1. I put drops in my eyes once a day.
  2. I take a 30-minute break from online from time to time.
  3. I currently use Flux and have lowered my screen glare.
  4. My glasses have an anti-glare in the lens itself, yet I still struggle with it.
The only thing that currently helps is wearing prescription sunglasses, but it makes writing and seeing the screen much more complicated.

P.S Any talk of using the white theme on BHW will cause an infraction (I am just kidding want to know what you do and what works)

I know this subject has been beaten to death, but I have not seen a solution so far; when I have to wear my prescription sunglasses, I do feel my eyes are not as red. Just venting and hoping maybe we can find a solution as I don't think I am the only one dealing with this.

Since no one will say it, i'll do it
Use the White Theme !!!

I find myself at the computer majority of the day, 10hr+, more on work days.
I use night light settings on my pc
I keep the room well lit
I get off my ass every 30-60 minutes (I try even when i'm super busy/focused) and go play with the pets, even if its just ~5minutes.
I don't take drops often, only when my eyes starts to get super irritated.
I wear blue light glasses
If anything is giving me a headache (which it does happen quite often), i go take a break, unless whatever I'm dealing with is life and death situation), break usually always accompanies cooling off with a face wash.
But most importantly, white theme !

I sometimes get the feeling that it's all hype. I invested in a pair of blu-ray glasses. After about three hours, both my eyes were strained and bloodshot. Thought it might have been coincidence so tried it again the next day. Same story. Took a break, then tried again about ten days later - same story.

Tried the built in 'Night Light' / 'Night Shift' filters and just get a headache every time I use them.

I can be on a computer sometimes 16 hours a day, sometimes I get eye strain but it's nowhere near as bad as when I use any apparatus to block blue light.

All I do now is wash my eyes and take short breaks now and most importantly, make sure theres a gentle backlight on in the room at night to avoid 'glare'. I don't even think anti-blue light technology has even been researched throughly enough to ensure it's safety and speaking from experience this lack of evidence of efficacy not only seems quite apparent but the reverse seems to be holding more weight.

Ok, well my first advice is obviously to swap to white theme in particular for bhw, as yellow on black is pure eye rape. Can't just fit your self into blacktheme gang white theme gang, It's not so....black and white (see what i did there). Some sites are better with a darker theme and some are better with white. Each one is different.

With all that said, You need to make sure your eyes are moving around!!! Stack monitors, left or right and up top. Always keep your eyes bouncing around between them. And blue light filter goes without saying, but most people already have that turned on! (make sure you are using a matte monitor, not a glossy monitor too)

Use the White Theme !!!
You have been infracted -3 points, jk. I have tried the white theme, but for me, it's not the real BHW. I know my eyesight is getting worse as I am nearsighted with astigmatism. My mom had problems with her eye to the point that she lost vision in one eye due to glaucoma.

I really have to be careful about it, but at the same time, I need to be on here as well.

Everything is better once you get used to it right. I've been using white theme so long that when i load in on private browsing or a none logged-in computer my eyes instantly bleed xD. Could always load in your own CSS as well. Change that yellow text and lighten up that black to a dark grey. Or add more theme, its about time no? lol

Yeah, I know those pains.
I have the same issue, to a point, I don't drive at night, unless I really have to.
I can barely see the night street with headlights/traffic lights etc properly without it being a total blur to me due to astigmatism.

For me, some websites/apps "dark mode" are actually nice to have, but BHW's black is like a shiny gloss black that really hurts my eyes after a few minutes of usage.

You mentioned it, and I am on the white theme, and it's not that bad. [I think I will be banned, jk] At this point, I am ready to take all suggestions, and I hope this helps other people, not just me. Thank you all for the suggestions, and keep it coming.

This is becoming an issue as well, and I don't know if there is a way to stop it from regressing. My wife drives at night, as my eyesight in my 40s has not been good at all. I do hope your eyes get better @xReminisce.

5 minute breaks every 45 minutes. Every 4th break is 30 minutes.

Increase font size.

See an optometrist once a year (or once in a while at least). I require glasses/contacts full time so I have to go once a year. There’s been many times I didn’t think my eyes had gotten worse because I get used to my vision. Turns out my eyes had in fact gotten much worse and new glasses made a big difference. Even if you think you don’t need glasses it doesn’t hurt to have your eyes checked once a year because they look at more than just your vision!

Provoke a yawn at every break, it relaxes face muscles and lubes the eyes.

Install an addon that reads out loud. Use it as much as possible when you read an article or when reading bhw. While listening, close your eyes and move them in circles.

There are a lot of eye exercises and massage that can help. Look into it.

Lay on your back with 2 warm teabags on your eyes a few times per day.

I don't use any glasses and I feel good about it.

When I used glasses, my eyes would hurt and feel tired. I tried 3 different types and results were bad in terms of my comfort.

I have to be really close to the monitor, but no discomfort on my eyes. Only mental tiredness but frequent breaks and naps help, though it's not related to eyes.

My mom had problems with her eye to the point that she lost vision in one eye due to glaucoma.
And this makes me wonder. How can a piece of plastic with special parameters prevent that? I think glasses don't prevent much and it's just useful when one is driving or operating machines

These days they're so cheap with glasses they don't even bother using actual glass. This is a special offer instead. And this piece of plastic fake glass brought so much pain and made my eyes itch that I said good bye to all kinds of optometrists, concluding it's not worth it.

I wear contacts normally but usually when I'm at my PC, I wear glasses.

Every ~2 hours, I try to:

- walk around/stretch my legs.
- put saline solution in my eyes, give or take.
- Give my eyes a break, go/look outside.

As you get older, you really value those calm moments away from the screen.

Use this https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/break-timer/hklkdbpicdmlpoiellngedpejjkmapei?hl=en

It should auto pop up every 20 minutes or so. Give yourself a 5 min break every 20 mins. Also big fonts and proper light in your room.

Lastly, go outside at least once a day and walk for 10-15 mins.

I just added that extension as it could only help. Also, I should go out for more walks, not just for my eyes but just for general health.

Carrots work wonders for the eyes. Take 2 or 3 carrots and grate them using a grater and make a salad out of it by adding a teaspoon of olive oil, a bit of mayonnaise, etc, some chopped lettuce.
And eat this during your day, everyday. High levels of nutrition for the eyes and it resolves eye strain, any dark circles, etc.

Unless you are a mod, you need not spend 7 hours a day on black theme on bhe only. So white theme might not be needed for all.

I have seen a tool (forget the name) that gives a yellow tint to the screen.
I believe that yellow light wouldn’t harm your eyes as the blue light.

Stop using f.lux
eat more vitamin A
Don't stay on pc/phone/tv etc at night
And don't work more than 8 hours daily

This is what helped me
