My websites main audience is from US it's getting a decent amount of traffic from US already. Now I want to expand my search traffic into Australian audience too. I could be wrong but I'm planning to build more links to general keywords from local com.au domains (niche relevant guest posts etc.) Am I doing this right?

Yes, that should help.

There are alternatives like closing your site to .com.au domain but that's quite drastic.

Yes, build some Australian domain backlinks and you will begin noticing an increase in Australian traffic both naturally and through these links (people following the backlink to your site). Good luck!

Thanks so much. To be able to get com.au, I might need and ABN probably but will surely take a look. I'm not 100% sure how Google will understand that I want to rank for the same keyword in AU instead of US because the keyword I want to target is pretty competitive in US while AU is much more easier. I'm thinking to alter one of my pages and make it more informative my competitor in AU.

Thanks a lot! I will try this.

Yes, you can optimize on-page for it as well.

GSC allows you to geo target but be careful with it

You can get .au domains now and you don't need an ABN for those. But yes for .com.au you do and I think the business name has to match the domain.

Code:
A company, business name, partnership, sole trader or association registered in Australia
or
A legal person with a trademark valid in Australia

You still need to have a trademark valid in Australia.

does any one know of any agency or law firm that can "rent" their ABN for a domain registration? or a trademark matching the domain name is a must?

Before building links, you can perhaps optimize some posts around Australia specific keywords and get some organic traction first. Maybe creating links right away can look suspicious to Google. Anyway, good luck OP with your site and Cheers!

Were you able to find an agency or otherwise resolve the issue of renting an ABN?
