Do you charge clients for SEO audits?

It's mostly depends on the client and the sites.

I will offer paid one for auditing their the sites alone.

If they are willing to buy my recommended package after auditing the sites, I will offer you a free one.

Sometimes I will offer a free audit for a season festival

For my clients, I used to offer free audits in the past, but sometimes I charged for more extensive analysis.
Also, many used to get a free audit and never respond. I agree with @GNews .

And those are the real time wasters.

I get people now asking to add me on Skype, asking for recommendations for their site etc and I've stopped doing it.

So many time wasters and tyre kickers, it's stupid. Of those who start of saying they have $5k a month, what do I suggest, then it drops to $2k a month, but will order next month, but need more information from me... Then it's $500 a month but can we do an audit first. NO, we can't.

I've a couple of audits we did a while back for these people " definitely going to place orders with you " then never do I might use as case studies and publish them.

Agreed.

Real clients don't waste time. In fact, most real clients already understood what they are paying for from your FAQs and product/service page itself and may not even bother going to and fro Skyping the sales team to death.

I think clients should be prepared to pay $50 for an audit to begin with.

That $50 will IMMEDIATELY show you who's serious or not.

The 'talkers' will run away from that.

The serious ones will just buy services.

Too many people on the internet today just doing commercial espionage. Aren't even real clients; just people looking to steal ideas.

I provide the service of SEO audits to my clients free of cost.

Hey,

Do you charge clients for SEO audits or how is your approach when it comes to pricing and SEO audits for clients?
For basic Audits no need of charging them.
And its good to charge some basic $$ even for basic auditing.

Most of the buyers nowadays has good knowledge about their SEO and marketing stuffs.
If we go in detail, then yes, We should charge them good.

You absolutely should charge for a comprehensive SEO audit; it requires significant time, expertise, and expensive tool subscriptions. Charging upfront is the best way to filter out non-serious clients.
Many professionals use a tiered system: offer a paid "Discovery Audit" ($500-$2,500 based on site size) that includes actionable takeaways. You can then waive or significantly discount this fee if they commit to a long-term monthly retainer. This way, you get paid for your expertise regardless, and it frames the audit as a crucial investment, not a free sales pitch.

Whether to charge for an SEO audit depends entirely on your business model and target client. The general consensus is to charge for the full, deep technical audit but offer a free high-level summary or "Teaser Audit."
The full audit takes specialized time and effort and is valuable intellectual property, so it should be priced accordingly—often as a standalone product. The free teaser, however, should be focused on uncovering 2-3 massive, non-obvious flaws to demonstrate your expertise and justify the price of the complete service package. This approach qualifies leads and minimizes time wasted on non-serious clients.

I provide a basic audit for free, but I charge for a detailed technical and competitor audit depending on the project size.

Yes, I charge for audits. I only give a quick free overview to show them what's wrong.

There are no fixed number, but main trending seo types now include technical seo, on-page seo, off-page seo, local seo, and ai-driven/semantic/ content cluster startegies
