Backlink Tiers and Other Backlink Questions

Hello everyone

I have read a lot of different threads using the search function, but would love to verify I am absorbing the information correctly. I have a few questions about the types of tiers of backlinks, and one about niche forum Backlink edits.

Question 1:
For backlink tiers, are they as follows?
Tier 1 - PBNS, guest posts, niche edits, web 2.0s->
Tier 2 - web2.0s, cheap pbns ->
Tier 3 - worse web 2s, PBNs, but link to tier 2

Am I missing anything important? Are there any other types of backlink types you could suggest?

Question 2: One tip for backlinks on forums piqued my interest. Would it be OK to link on irrelevant sites to your niche just for the boost?

Example: Niche - cannabis
Site I could obtain backlink on - gaming related forum

Would it be ok in any way to place a backlink in an old forum post on an account on an old gaming forum, linking to my “money site”?
Is there a specific way to do it? Contextually or something

Some people do, I don't.

I like to keep my backlinks niche relevant always. I don't want irrelevant websites pinging to my backlinks or my money site.

However, gaming is technically a sub-category of cannabis because a lot of people who game claim "I'm better when I'm high/smoking". So, that example might work if the content is proper.

I pretty much do this too.

If there's some credible overlap within the niche, I think the link is worth it - especially if the content is highly relevant.

Best case is the site and content being 100% relevant. Still likely to be worthwhile - somewhat relevant site, super relevant content. Worst case - no relevancy whatsoever.

Yeah, sorry. My response was for money site links.

I'd agree that tier 3 links really don't matter. But then again, the more relevant the link the better - regardless of what it's for.

I use irrelevant websites all the time for t1 links and I’m doing well in serps. Just imagine if plumbers only linked to plumbers. Not realistic.

If the website you’re posting on creates it’s own page where your link will be placed (think article post not blog comment) the page level relevancy of the content you post is going to be enough to make that page on the irrelevant website (as a whole), relevant.

Yes, the page will definitely be relevant if the topic and content is. And the link may well prove worthwhile. But if the whole site can be relevant as well, surely that's a bonus?

I do have better results using very relevant homepage links with exact match anchor text. That is the perfect world. I’ve gone from nowhere to #10 with just one link like that (not a difficult keyword).

But as we all know links like that are hard to get and you cannot build links like that very often or you get hit by penguin for over optimized anchor text. That means you need to find more realistic linking opportunities AND more links to dilute the anchor text ratio. For these links where your anchor text is going to be your brand name or whatever, it is not necessary to tip toe around whatever the domain is about.

I use totally irrelevant websites for links for easy to rank for keywords and consistently rank just using those irrelevant websites for links.

At the end of the day your strategy is yours alone to execute. If you have a reason that makes sense to you where you need or want to have backlinks only from very relevant websites then that makes sense to do so. I can think of a couple reasons why one might need to do that (if you’re going to build and flip the website for example). But at this moment in SEO history it’s not necessary to do so for general SEO purposes.

If the link is coming from the homepage of the gaming-related forum, then it might help but still, it would be a stretch. And if the link is coming from forum threads then it should be considered a crap link. It owes basically no value or backlink juice.

There is nothing contextual about it. It's user-generated content, so it isn't going to hold even the same value as a backlink from a new site in the same niche, with little to no authority. It isn't worth it. Backlinks aren't always determined by the DA of the website.
