Is Google’s Ranking Algorithm Really That Complicated?

My theory would be that Google wants a range of different answers within the top 10 for any given search term, to give it the best chance of satisfying that search when it isn't quite sure of user intent. So it's not going to put 10 versions of the same answer in the top 10 in that case. It will maybe try to have some sites in there that provide some variety. That would be why two sites that are carbon copies can never rank both together. Instead, some other site will get in there which doesn't compete with the other results on authority, but does provide a variation on the naswer to the search query. That would be why sometimes you will look at the top 10 results and wonder how the hell that one site ranks in there when it's got like, 20 RDs and nowhere near as many articles as the others, or the articles are all less than 500 words, or whatever. You think it shouldn't rank, but it does because it's just different enough.
good point! I never thought about it, but I can see this being the case :)

In the end, they do admit that Google Algorithms are quite complex, though.

What do you think?
This is like saying that the Empire State Building is just a huge block of steel and limestone. When you zoom out something too far, you start losing the sense of complexity.

Stuff like Relevancy and Authority are the bare basics of any search engine. That's the first thing that you takle. And a lot of people don't get this. They focus their energy on other stuff rather than improving their Content and building Authority.

And that's basically the only stuff you have control over. Other than that, Google works in magical ways. It's pile of ml algorithms would be ranking personalised serps to users based on their localtime of browsing or it would be ranking results on the basis of a result's bounce rate. Whatever they do, you don't have control over it anyways.

Google's algorithms aren't simple. But as an SEO you should assume they are. Atleast, if you want to keep your sanity and don't want to churn your brains over every single observable datapoint.

The macro perspective isn't complicated, to say the least
But both relevance and authority boil down to a whole array of other factors

What do you mean by keep on building manual backlinks on a daily basis? What kind of backlinks you are referring to?
Manual backlinks are the ones that you build manually and not with the help of any software. Manually link building is a natural way of link building. It can never be penalized by Google. If you use software or spammy link building services, you will be in trouble in few months if not weeks.

You hire people who pay other people for manually created links. Isn't this automated?

No. Hiring people who build links for you is not called Automated links. But if that person is using software to build fast links and low quality links then it is automated. Make sure you hire someone who is putting efforts in building links, like manual outreach to bloggers for guest posts, manual links building by content submission, etc. Make sure that he is not using any software for this.

Google's TOS is very clear on any type of link building...

Go tell that to the thousands of businesses that have lost their rankings due to your "Manual link building".
White hat seo is a myth. Famous quote.

As soon as you start optimization, you broke their TOS.

Their logic is that you shouldn't create website with the intent of being in Google. If you do this, you break TOS.

Yeah, John Mueller has a very different approach on the SEO.

yes to authority! if u got a backlink from forbes, huffingtonpost i think it will help boost a lot of ranking

i agree with this,

even carbon copies but unique enough not to be considered 100% duplicates get treated differently

2 carbon copies can launch at same time and one can rank for keywords the other cant meanhile the latter also ranks for stuff the former cant.

i think sandbox and duration is also very niche specific.

in the pirate field i notice its about 12 months while other niches may be released right off the bat.
What about the finance niche's sandbox duration?
