I'm looking to host a video streaming website, but I'm a complete newbie, I don't know what specs are enough or to get shared hosting or dedicated one, so I will provide you with my situation and hopefully any of you gentlemen could help me:

Expected traffic on the website is let's say 5,000 active users at the same time
all viewing videos/files that are hosted on the website's server or an external ssd storage, what's the best for my situation and forgot to mention anonymous regestration is something i would appreciate as well :)

The following questions may not be relevant to Web hosting, but im gonna ask them anyways hoping for an answer:
How do you make it hard for ordinary people to download the videos off the website or would making a download detection system a better idea?

Thanks in advance.

I would suggest to go with shared hosting basic plan and as your site grows then upgrade to a higher plan. does your site use ffmpeg? If so ask your host about it. Many hosts support it.

Any specific hosts you recommend?

Taking into account your needs, think that a good high power VPS hosting account will be the solution.
BTW, what is your monthly budget?

That is the key feature in your case.
When you have conversation with potential provider start discussion this key feature.

Go for an good vps provider , as normal hosting would make your web slow

something around $1000 for the hosting only. And how about bandwidth? read below for a further explanation.

How come? I thought dedicated hosts were faster? and usually VPS providers don't give you a lot of storage and if they did, the bandwidth would be limited to 1TB or something in that range. Considering that the videos hosted are around ~500MB each *5,000 views daily (or more) that's around 2,500,000/mb of bandwidth daily, or am I mistaken and what's the best action recommended in this situation.
vimeo is my 1st choice if you have more traffic
Vimeo is a one good soloution, but unfortunately the content I'm trying to publish is copyrighted. I don't think they allow copyrighted content, that's why i'm looking to either host the content myself and secure it from being stolen/downloaded... or a good host like vimeo but off-shore.

Sorry if I'm asking lots of question, but as I said previously I'm new to this stuff and i'm hoping to learn more here.

As you said you're going to host the videos on the server, shared hosting is not an option - no shared hosting provides enough storage you will need. VPS may be tricky, too. Your best bet would be a dedicated server with lots of storage, and for the estimated user count - definitely a 10Gbps connection. $1000 should be a workable budget - it may not be easy to find a provider, but it's doable.

Thanks you very much, I will definitely consider a dedicated server.

Believe NetShop-isp.com.cy server hosting solutions will suit your needs.
I'd like to point out that all of your web sites and projects will in good hands if you choose them.

If your video is mainstream I think video press from WordPress is more than enough to serve an unlimited number of your visitors. However, I have never been in that position though. Just 10k viewers estimated a month and my server has no issue

do ur research before u jump into this, but heres a few links:

video host: https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/d...-like-netu-openload-etc.1394929/post-15241128
website host: https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/hosting-for-movie-site.1397152/post-15155659
ad networks: https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/online-movie-site-business-model.1385538/post-15021465

again, do your research, BHW is full of helpful hints but a quick rundown:
website: profitserver.net for $10pm youll be fine with for the first 3-6 months until traffic builds
video host: streamzz.to is dmca ignore and encrpy installed with minimum ads no deletion either
domain: njal.la or someone like that

its too hard to stop people downloading videos from the internet, youll never get it perfect. i made an obscure link and restrict by domain(so they cant scrape) but thats the best ill get to

Wrong, if he will host movies or tv shows in web hosting WHICH IS SHARED, he will be suspended.

My suggestion to OP is embeded videos by hosting it in Streamango, Mixdrop and any other file hosting available for such activities.
Then yes, you can use Web Hosting Shared.

If you want to host your own videos in your own server, you will need Dedicated Server. VPS is good to start but isn't dedicated in Cores.

I recommend you go with Shared Web Hosting only but only if you do only EMBEDED videos (not hosted by your hosting).

VPS will work fine to start or dedicated server, if you want cheap offshore vps dmca ignored here is
https://alexhost.com/vps/https://flokinet.is/vps-server.phphttps://abelohost.com/http://www.2x4.ru/index.php?pid=70 (must be in russia location in their case)

Most of those have also dedicated server, take a look. Dedicated server will suit good for you if you want to host your own videos and files,

Thank you very much, lots of valuable resources there. I have definitely learned more.
I'm considering a dedicated server to host the videos on my own, and have a anti-theft system that bans users who request too many videos in a short period of time.

Rule #1.. never go with shared hosting for Movie streaming / Adult streaming and whatever streaming websites. Shared hosting is not for that and not only you will lack performance but you risk to have your host limited.

For ~5k users your best bet is VPS .

VPS + Web Panel like Webuzo Panel and you are all good.

"How do you make it hard for ordinary people to download the videos off the website or would making a download detection system a better idea?" You need a specific video player with programing skills for that. But! Anything that is available for 1 click streaming can be recorded offline :D

Thanks! I will go with a VPS and when the traffic increses I will switch to a dedicated server. People recording the content isn't a problem. If they're willing to sit there and record 500+ hours of content, it's not like I can do anything about it, only thing I want to prevent is direct downloading the content with no effort because the content doesn't exist anywhere on the internet excep on my website.

As for reliable host for streaming, have you looked at digitalserver.com.mx - they offer feature-packed hosting dedicado economico. Recommended.
