Air purifier for apartment?

Okay guys thanks all for your replies. I did some light reading on the subject since making this thread, and looked around for what's available to buy and prices etc.

In fact, at one point I almost decided not to buy an air purifier. But then a few minutes later I changed my mind. Fuck it, I wanna get one, it's not gonna cost much, and I'll get one, if only to get the desire out of my head :p

First things first. I can get it for about $100 bucks. And the filter replacement I can find cheapest for $17 bucks. I'd probably buy 3 filter replacements straight away. That's $150 bucks, and I'm covered for about 2 years.

The air purifier has 3 filters it seems. The first one is like a basic filter to catch the bigger stuff, and it's washable, so it never needs replacing. The other filters are HEPA and activated carbon, and you need to replace these after 1500 hours of usage. That's about 62 days if you have it on 24/7. But I plan on using the timer and let the thing work for 8 hours per day, which would get me about 6 months or more of usage out of the filters. But if I skip a day here and there, and if I use the filters even after the 1500 hours for a few more days, could probably drag it out longer...

The reason I want a carbon filter is because HEPA doesn't really help with smoke, because smoke particles are too small. And the main reason I'm getting an air purifier is because of smoke. But the carbon filter gets it. According to my reading anyway. And also there's like Ionizer filters or something, but apparently these are even dangerous, especially if you run them in a small space where you're also located at the same time as it's working. So I'd avoid these.

Just to add, I also have a bunch of computers in the room where I'll put the air purifier. These kick up and collect dust. So of course I also want the HEPA filter.

Okay, then the filter advertises as being good for between 14-24m2 square meters space. My room is no larger than 15-20m2 square meters. So it's perfect for that.

It has a timer, which is great because I can just turn it on when I wake up and set it to work for 8 hours. No need to worry about shutting it down, forgetting to shut it down, realize I forgot to shut it down days later, etc.

It has a filter replacement reminder, which is awesome. Make my life easier, make my to-do reminder list emptier. Wonderful :p

It has air quality indicator. Okay, this is cool I like it.

It has 4 speeds of operation. So that's cool. Also, this device produces noise between 18.8 and 57 dB. So I hate hate hate hate hate hate loud noises. For you guys that had those unnecessarily loud motorbikes and cars, go fuck yourselves, you pricks!

So that's it. I can't be bothered to do more research to be honest. It's hard to find actual good info about this stuff. When you look on Youtube and on blogs it's all product reviews mostly.

And if you look on reddit it's mostly people just telling you what they use with no evidence. Or those other assholes where a guy asks for an air purifier because of smoke, and then these assholes come answering like "oh you shouldn't smoke" and "oh your roomate smokes? kill him" or "oh your neighbor smokes? kill him, call the landlord, move to a different planet asap". Fucking idiots. THAT IS NOT THE QUESTION BEING ASKED ON THIS REDDIT THREAD HERE MKAY!!!

Uffff...

So anyway, that's it. I'll order this air purifier tomorrow. If anyone has a compelling reason why I shouldn't get one, or why I shouldn't get this one, speak up :)

So I changed my mind. I took a second look to see what else is available around the same price range, and I'm gonna get this one instead - https://www.sencor.com/air-purifier/sha-6400wh-eue3

Comparing it to the other one I shared above...

The price was the same where I was looking, but then I did an extra search on the Google of things, and found this one for about $18 cheaper. But the filters for this one are like $2 more expensive. So let's say the price is the same.

This one also has a UV-light, while the other one doesn't. This is the main reason I wanna get this one. I mean, if we're gonna do this, let's do it right. Right? Right! UV-C Lamp Lifetime: 20,000 Hours (More than 5 Years of Standard Operation). UV Light: Wavelength: 254 nanometres

This one is a little quieter. The dB thing.

This one is a little lighter. The weight.

This one is a little smaller. The total dimensions added up. Overall it will take a bit less space.

This one's air outflow is on top, while the other one is on the front lower side. I prefer the outflow to be on top.

This one has 3 speeds, while the other one has 4 speeds. Less is usually better, so this is cool. My brain can't handle 4 speeds, OMG, it will take 4 lifetimes to use 4 speeds.. But 3 speeds is fine, makes sense :p

The things I prefer about the other one...

The other one perhaps looks a bit better, aesthetically. But who really cares about this. They both look nice anyway.

The other one covers an area up to 24m2, while this one up to 20m2. But whatever, the room I'll be keeping it in is no larger than 20m2.

The other one has air quality measure/display, while this one does not. Okay, at first I was like no way. I want an air quality measurement on the display. But then I thought about it, and really, who the hell cares? So the machine tells you if your air quality is poor, good, or great. Okay, thanks for the info. Now what? It's useless info really. It's cool to know I guess, but knowing it doesn't really serve a purpose if you ask me.

The other one has air purification speed up to200m³, while this one is 95m³. Okay so this kinda sucks a little bit. But it must be said that everybody's always lying and exaggerating. So if they say "speed up to", you know you ain't never getting the "up to". Still, it would make sense that the other one would purify more air and faster, due to its larger size. But it's okay, it's not a huge difference, and I have no need for speed :D

I did look at more of air purifiers, up to a certain price. Some things I noticed:

Many don't have a UV-light, and I want that.

Some that have a UV-light don't actually tell you the wavelength of the UV light, And while the wavelength doesn't tell me much, I'm no UV-light expert, I still like to see that the company that sells the thing cares enough to tell you the wavelength of the UV-light. It's like, I don't care to know, but I care to know that you know, and that you have enough sense to tell me.

Many have an Ionizer, and I don't want that.

All in all, as usual I can never get exactly what I want, unless I have it custom made haha. But whatever, I'll get this Sencor air purifier and move on with my life.

There's nothing to say really. I turned it on, it seems to be working. Can't really measure the air quality. Whatever, it's done.

I'm just wondering whether I should keep it on the floor or put it somewhere higher.

Well, what can I say. If I stand on top of it and inhale the air as it comes out of the purifier, it's nice. Has a clean feeling/smell/vibe about it. Though I could be tripping.

There are 3 speeds on the purifier. The first 2 speeds are quiet, but the 3rd (strongest) speed is quite loud, and of course it also produces lots of air. But I couldn't "live" with it on speed 3 next to me all day every day. I'll keep it at speed 2 for the most part, and use speed 3 only sometimes for a bit, like if I go out for an hour or something like that.

I guess I could buy like an air quality meter or whatever. Then I could test and really know. But I don't think I'll do that, not any time soon anyway, I'm not Bill Gates over here :p

I tried the setting for 8 hours timer. It worked fine, the purifier turned off 8 hours later.

In the beginning when I turned it on there was a faint smell about the air it produced, but that was probably because the machine is new. After a while I wasn't smelling it anymore. You know.

All in all, I'm happy with the purchase. Not too expensive, looks nice, it's not too big, and probably bumps up the air quality in my room here by a few points :)

Also I'll probably first decide where I'm gonna place it, and then decide which one to buy. Because I wanted to place the one I got somewhere, but then realized that because my purifier outputs the clean air on top, if I put it where I want, the air is gonna be hitting on something right above it. That's not good. In retrospect I should have gotten one that outputs the clean air from the front. But oh well, no biggie, live and learn :)

And I'll get one that also has an air quality meter.

And I'll get one that has more timer options. The one I got has 2h, 4h, and 8h. But what happened to 6h, and 16h, and 20h? haha :D

And I'll get one that has like a schedule thing. Like, set it to work from 2PM to 10PM every day on its own. Save me the trouble to remember to turn it on and shit.

Yeah, I'll move to a different country right away. I'll start collecting papers to apply for a visa, then apply, then wait forever to get it (or not). I'll find an apartment to rent. I'll go there and learn where the supermarket is and the streets and how to find my way.

Personally, I've found my HEPA filters still remove odours fairly well, though.

My bird's vet actually recommended getting an air purifier with a UV-C light to reduce the chances of my bird catching my wife's bird's disease. This might be overkill for you, but it's another thing to look into.

When you're looking into getting one, check the reviews to make sure it's a true HEPA filter and not a HEPA-type filter. Additionally, there are a lot of units that look similar but they have different brand names. I haven't test these for quality, but it's just something else to be aware of.

Personally, I've found the smaller desktop-sized air purifiers you find on Amazon work well for a whole bedroom, although my larger unit moves more air through it per hour. When you're looking at a product, see if it mentions the air exchange rate per hour or what size room it's recommended for before purchasing.

Okay guys, I couldn't help myself. I did it. I bought another one.

Okay this one is some serious shit. It's like double the size to the other one I got. It's less loud at the highest speed too. It has an air quality measure thing. The timer is up to 12 hours, with a 30 minute choice (30 min, 1h, 1,30, 2h, 2,30, etc up to 12 hours). And it looks good.

The price difference, well, I got the other one for like $110, and I got this one for like $180. But I also got a set of filters as a gift with this one, costing about $27. Of course, the gift is a HEPA 11 filter, which is cheaper. The HEPA 13 one is like $45 bucks. Still, a gift is a gift, no problem :D

So this one has an Ionizer. Couldn't be helped, it's impossible to find an air purifier that has all the cool shit, but without an ionizer. However, there is a button on the display where I can turn the ionizer on and off. So I'll just keep the ionizer turned off, and we're good.

So the other air purifier I got's gonna watch over me while I sleep, and this new boss one is gonna watch over me while I work.

And now we're done here :)

Nah, we're done now haha.

I only get hooked until I solve it. When I solve it, I write down on my monthly to-do list any ongoing tasks related to it (like clean it every 2 months etc) and how to do them in certain detail, and then I let it sink in my subconscious. Then I move to the next 300 issues I have to deal with and make perfect.

Ask me about air purifiers in 3 months, see if I can say anything about the topic without first doing some light reading :)
