I am currently managing an account for a local electrician in London. I have set up the google ads campaign and let it run for a week to maximise clicks bidding strategy but I am getting super low CTR.

What will be the best strategy for home services in a popular city for google ads..?

For home services the key USPs are availability (same or next day), and guatantee and license.
For higher CTR you must include the problem the user is describing, lightswitch, fridge, dryer, etc...
Go over the search terms and see what you can exclude, and what needs their own ad group or campaign.
Make sure you don't run on the display network or search partner network, unless it's on purpose.
I'm not a big fan of maximize clicks, because it tends to give you the ones you don't necssarily want. If you have enough data you can try maximize conversions, and if not, go for manual cpc. Make sure you get a decent impression share in the top results.

Additionally, make sure you only run on areas your client is serving, ideally with a list of zip codes.

That's perfect. Thanks for your guidance. I am doing all that you have mentioned so it's really good to be re-reminded and I am not doing anything wrong. You are right about maximise clicks - I just do this for a few weeks and then change it to manual CPC.

I was just thinking that my ad campaigns are performing way better for clients in smaller cities rather than big cities like London. Is this is a normal pattern for Google Ads..?

Presume you're targeting boroughs of London too, not just the big city?

In that case, you might want to seperate the campaigns for neighborhoods. Make sure to include that in the ad.

I think you are not using the right keywords. Do some keyword research on SEMrush or Ahrefs. Use the most relevant but high volume keywords.

I am using the right keywords tho. I am targetting the following keywords:
electrician near me
electricians
emergency electrician
fire alarm installation
fire alarm services
cctv installation
electricians
domestic electrician
commercial electrician
electrician london

I have created one ad per keyword per landing page and have also added a long list of negatives. All keywords I am targeting are "phase match" and [exact match]

Did you check the search volumes of these keywords?

Extensions pay a big role in your CTR, too. You should sure you use everything you can.

Yep, I did :) I have paid version of SemRush. I think London is just a competitive market. I have a similar campaign for another client, same niche but different city and this ads are performing excellently.

Please check the ad copy. 83 clicks out of 3210 impressions means there must be some issue with the ad copy.

Increase the budget and add more keywords. With Google ads it gets better with time and sometimes a week is not enough for google to gather more data to serve your ads. The optimization score shows your ad is being delivered at the top. Maybe more broader search terms and also retargeting can improve on overall performance of the marketing campaign.
