I actually thought about switching to Joomla, since that is what I was first introduced to, before wordpress, but I find having to do so much more in Joomla than I could do with Wordpress. Granted Joomla has some amazing features, but for just quick and simply, you can't beat Wordpress, and if you can more power to ya, but for me, Wordpress works just fine.

For plugins, it all depends on what you need the plugin to do, some of the most commen plugins would be the most popular ones, which you can view on the wordpress website, but 'all in one seo' is a must, 'wp-cache' is good if you know how to use it to optimize your website.

Yeah I usually do my own custom scripts, if you know how to code you can make faster and easier systems.
I use WP sometimes to create a simple cms - easier and quicker to do than building from ground up since I just fillet all the crap aout of wp and some skin I pick.
But in terms of speed you can't beat one of my flat file databases cms. They'll kill joomla, wordpress, drupal any anything else you want to throw at it. They're faster, they can handle more users, they can run on any server even shared with the digg effect and massive traffic.
Learn to code - it's worth it!

Or just go to one of the free template sites, eyeball what they've got, download half-a-dozen, and then steal everything from one: 'h' definitions, bodycopy, color scheme, & layout. Just give credit via Creative Commons License to the designer. Ultra fast; ultra cheap; ultra easy.
I was absolutely the same way, by the end of my senior year had 120 sites built while in classes.
One thing I think we tend to forget is that the internet is still much like the Wild West of the United States in the 1800's....unexplored and undeveloped. A place of tremendous opportunity for all who dare to set foot. There was gold in them there hills
All the hard coders used to rip on Dreamweaver or Frontpage for being unpure when making web pages, but Dreamweaver made it possible for anyone who would spend some time learning to put up a website and make it look pretty good.
Xsitepro is a recent development, it's kind of a hidden pocket of gold because not too many people use it and those that do really don't know how to use it to its full potential. I can use Xsite to make a site and have it indexed and ranked just as quick if not quicker than wordpress. Its a nice tool for someone who wants to set up their own site and doesn't know any html.
There's no doubt that wordpress has blown the doors open when it comes to web development. Probably partly due to the fact that is open source. Just about anyone who can click a few buttons will be able to set up a wordpress site. These days, a little effort and some free plugins and you could have an awesome looking site....you're still limited though and if the trend continues wordpress will eventually become good method for site development....instead of THE method of web develpment that it is today.
I love wordpress. Its so simple, yet you can digg in and make it as complicated as you're able.
This is just a guess, but I think the autoblogging craze will eventually leave a negative mark on wordpress. I have nothing against it, but big G always seems to burst the bubble of anything that works!
