If you actually think about it, most popular religious ideologies can be interpreted as this life being a simulation.

The fact that we have five senses makes it feel more "real", but what would a person without those senses think of about life? I'm not sure, but they would probably be living at a subconscious level. A level people who want to transcend this life try to attain.

If we do live in virtual reality, there's no "blue" pill option to wake up outside the bounds of the virtual reality - the computer/server that computes and generates the virtual reality and the avatars need to be outside the virtual reality.

As to, will we ever know? That's a tough question. But materialism or information-based/virtual, life is life. We're here and we make the best of it.
