Its a gateway between one end of the internet, and you. It acts as a forwarding number to your personal number for data. But it works in both directions, so you can send data via this gateway.

You use them either through your browser in network settings. Normally your provider will explain how.
If you have a number of private ones, you can use foxy proxy or a similar plugin to manage them.
Or you use them via an API and custom software.

As all previous posters failed, I will give it a try - It's an IP address changed so you do not look like the same website visitor when doing any actions on the website, e.g. making a lot of accounts.

There is exchange of data between your computer and server computer (in which website file is stored)

Using proxy only means you're accessing that website using another computer
Think as opening that same website through browser inside teamviewer than your actual browser
Just in proxy, instead of whole desktop, only internet traffic is routed

It can be used for variety of things, from doing things that require uniqueness of IP, or as simple as accessing blocked website

Do not confuse with VPN, as VPN will encrypt the traffic end-to-end so no one else can know what you're accessing. Because of this, it tend to be slower than a proxy. But privacy is guaranteed

Using proxy is straightforward. Unlike VPN that will route every data traffic sent from your computer, proxy is software-specific. If you set the proxy only in chrome setting, then other software (antivirus update, etc) will still be able to see your real identity

Proxy is something that changes your location and IP address to another country or location. There are freelancing platforms like Rev.com where a freelancer can work and earn money, but doesn't accept freelancers from all around the world. Rather from USA and a few more countries. In such situations, a person outside USA can buy a USA proxy and work with those websites and earn money.

Another thing I want to let you know is of VPN. It serves the same purpose. However, there is a chance your real IP and location can get leaked. This is why us using proxy is always preferred.
