Memorial Subforum For Our Deceased Members

My apologies if this has been posted here before (I did quick search and didn't find any results), but I'm pretty sure most of us would agree that a memorial subforum for our deceased members would be a great idea. The way I envision it is like this:


  1. The deceased member's Black Hat World account is "frozen" and retains the membership status that the deceased member had when they passed away (that way, they don't lose their Jr. VIP/Jr. Executive VIP/Executive VIP status if they had one).
  2. Once their account is "frozen", a moderator could post one last thread in the memorial subforum using the deceased member's account to alert other members of their recent passing.
  3. Black Hat World members could then post about their positive experiences with that particular member.

As I mentioned in this thread, this could be something nice for the members here to pay their respects to members who have contributed to this forum such as Techxan. I suppose that it could even be a chance for new members to see how our past members have helped and left a lasting impact on the community. Besides, the way I see it, we have a "Shitlist" section, so why not a memorial section?

Seems like it might be a viable idea. I wonder how one might coordinate the learning of deaths and confirmation of such. That does seem a bit morbid now that I think of it.
 
Sorry for the bump but this is a great idea and should be implemented. Maybe the idea of freezing accounts could also be extended to valuable members who’ve suddenly stopped using the forum (in cases where an unfortunate demise cannot be confirmed)?

@OldSalt was an exec and he went MIA. I know that one of the criteria for maintaining the exec badge is to renew your Jr.VIP but this could be ignored for particularly helpful members that have made a lasting impression on the community? He won’t give a rat’s ass but it just doesn’t feel right.

+1 for the memorial section though. If you can think of ways to confirm a member’s unfortunate passing, that’d fit in well too. Celebrating a member this way would probably be the closest to representing what this forum is about.
 
There are a few but I can't remember their usernames as one drowned helping another person out and his wife took over the business. Next, Gregory had cancer and had experimental treatments but it didn't work, unfortunately. Then @Pofecker @https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/pofecker-the-truth.366756/

I think we should honor them and maybe put up a badge that states something like "Always Remembered" . Thanks, @Yes for bumping this as I do think it's important to look at the members that contributed a great amount to this community.
 
I second this idea. And I don't find it depressing at all. What I do find depressing is not honoring properly the people who contribute one way or another to our society, regardless. To each his own. And this would be good for our BH community.

Agree, I always wanted to know if he is good or not, he left all of a sudden.

Being aware of one’s death is probably harder to determine than confirmation.

There’s members from around the world and they come & go. Most members have a level on anonymity and we have no idea who they are.

I’m all for remembering and honoring those who have contributed. I’ve seen it on other forums in the past. It showed as a membership status and I’ve seen it added to signatures as well.

That's a problem. But many senior members run businesses. Some of us are connected on other platforms. So, it's not that difficult for mods to personally verify this information for such members. They can't do anything about members who are anonymous or decide to suddenly leave BHW without informing anyone.

We can also create a list for contributing members. They can share their social media info and contact details of a person in case if they suddenly become inactive. This will prevent rumors and disinformation.

If I remember pofecker was the mod who approved my first BST here years back. He was so nice to me. And then this news came, I was really sad to hear it. Hope his family is fine now.
 
I was surprised to see this old suggestion bumped.

I was a Jr. VIP when I made this thread in response to the loss of a good member here named @Techxan. His son accessed his BHW account to let the forum know what happened, and that's how we all found out.

If you look at his profile right now, he just looks like a regular old elite member who just stopped using the forum in 2015; I personally feel that it really doesn't do him or his account justice.

Now that I'm an administrator, I can better consider how this would be implemented, so I can draft something up so that I can bring this up to the rest of the team on Monday. In hindsight, a graveyard subforum wouldn't be the best idea in terms of optics, but an account status and freezing the accounts could be worked out.

I'll leave the thread open for the moment and I'll update it once I have a response.
 
I 100% support this, i've seen on other forums (non-IM related), they have like a "Honored Members" group. We should honor those who passed away, at the end of the day we are not here only to waste time or make money; are one big community who should have respect for each other.

Just my 2c.
