Depends what you're using them for. My 2 main blogs, the ones that earn the most (none of them earn a whole lot lol!) anyway, those were built on new hand-reg domains. Most of my other sites are built on expired domains. I agree expired domains are great for stuff like 301's, PBN's, etc.

But for blogging, content is always going to be more important than if it's on an aged domain. If nothing else, I don't need a bunch of irrelevant links cluttering up my backlink profile. Of course, a high DA expired domain will give a blog a head start for sure, but I think long-term it's probably not going to matter that much. So for blogging, from my experience, an expired domain is not as necessary. But for other things yes an expired domain is helpful.

Expired domains just make it a bit easier to rank (+faster results).

They work well if you know what you're doing. Inexperienced SEOs may not know what the best way to handle expired domains and don't do proper due diligence. Lately I've been building sites strictly on expired domains. I've learned that they tend to index faster and with less effort depending the history.

Expired domains work most of the times. When they don't, they act like fresh domains which means you'll need to put efforts from zero. However, the ROI is still much better than going with fresh domains. I've seen people don't put in hardwork and then blame the expired domain. It's like if they do the same on fresh domain, they won't see any results there either. Expired domains help in faster rankings but can't fix bad SEO.

Thanks for the gist :)

lol some of the guys here saying that expired domains don't work. I started a blog on an expired auctioned domain and it was indexed within 2 days. All my pages are being indexed within 24 hours. EVEN the shitty ones.
