Advertising in Magazines

I was in Books-A-Million yesterday evening and was looking at some of the advertisements in a few magazines. There seem to be a few get rich magazine out there like Small Business Opportunities Magazine and towards the back they have advertising (some full page, some a few lines).

I was wondering if anyone on here has tried advertising with one of them and if so what was your ROI. I mean were talking prices starting over $600 up to over $13,000.

Jim Straw had a great tip regarding advertising in magazines.

First you identify the magazines that would appeal to your targeted market. His example was the same as yours, small biz op mags.

Then you collect a number of back issues. You want to see which ads are consistently appearing in the magazines. I think he recommended trying to collect at least 7-8 back issues, but obviously the more you have - the better.

The idea being that if someone is consistently advertising in the same mags with the same ads, they are making money.

Once you have identified one of these repeat ads, study everything you can from it- product, pricing, copy-writing, size, placement, etc.

As for ROI, I've never tried it myself, but I would definitely use the strategy if I were looking into magazine ads.

You would definitely want to research your target market with back issues as hevindester said. Also considering the cost of running these ads I would invest in a real copywriter to maximize the effectiveness and hopefully ROI.

The other thing to consider and I have noticed this, is that if you did decide on a full page ad make sure the product is a high ticket item, in other words I wouldn't even consider a full page ad for anything that sells for less than $200.

Ive used "business opportunity" and "small business opportunity" back in the days (late 90s) to advertise my bulk email service (no i dont mail anymore). I did a small classified 4 line ad, which at the time, didnt even have a category for. So they made one for me called "BULK EMAILING SERVICE". The rate was $70/per month with a circulation of about 100k each magazine. I had an 800# that drove folks to a 30-60 second pre-recorded sales presentation including features, benefits and pricing options, and directed users to another number to place an order. I gained about 15-30 new customers per month for an ROI of 1000s% and generated thousands per month in income from those 2 ads alone.

Today, I doubt you will make as much or have as good a return, but if you are offering any sort of small business support service, you can do pretty well. The typical reader of those mags are not internet savvy, so offers that are played out online might have a shot offline.

When advertising in magazines such as you indicated you're not after sales. If you are, then don't expect much in the way of results. Instead, focus your efforts on generating leads. Think of the classified ads or display ads as landing pages. They landed on your offer/ad, you want them to opt-in (go to your website) and then you can sell them. If you go for the sale from the ad -- it's probably not going to happen.
