I was checking the serp for some keywords, analyzing and checking the competition. For one of the keywords the first page looked like that:

- Wikipedia

- A couple of authority sites I already know

- One site that's really bad, bad quality on all aspects, shitty design, thin content, but It's old and established and has that power and authority that makes anyshit they post rank instantly

- At the 7th position I found something interesting

Great metrics, great rankings and traffic as well

670k words, top organic words all have 100k+ monthly searches!

Till now, it's all great, the content is fairly good and unique, the on page work is done well!

But what about the off page part?!

Out of those 11k referring domains 1863 are fresh made blogspots!

There's a single domain with 400k backlinks to this site!

5k referring domains with DA below 20. All of the low DA referring domains are newly created web 2.0, and sblogs of all kinds with 100's of pages of spun content all linking to this site.

The only quality link in this profile is a wikipedia link, the rest are all complete spam shit.

Anchor texts are also interesting; 50% are brand name, the rest are foreign language or random English words!t Btw the brand name itself is a made up word with no search traffic.⛔

Of course spam doesn't work!

I don't use google but do check the competition and yes, have the same... a few ranking sites with hundreds (if not thousands) of blogspot blogs linking to them.

Edit: I was actually considering ordering like 100 blogspots for my site after seeing that bs.

This site is the product of 10k blogspots, web 2.0s, spam sites on $1 domains all fresh!

Have any idea how much does that cost?

There's nothing that proves that these links are not the ones doing the work,
I have a website with 10k RDs in which none I've built myself except a PBN that's already hidden,
I totally ignore these links, they do no good or harm and the majority are not even indexed

And ofc, spam will always work, but such type of spam, anything that won't be indexed is not really worth the go,
You can still build thousands of others to do the work with the right tricks when it comes to content and indexing

Maybe it is ranking in spite of the links?

I was thinking the same thing. How do you isolate and test to see if they’re really having an impact

You can't really tell for 100% but having a deeper look at the link profile there's literally no single worthy or authority site, even the high DA old ones are either forums-mostly foreign spam forums- or websites with 100's of pages linking to them and nothing more. Monthly 100 to 200 new links are added, and all of the new links for the last few months are blogspots..

Hard to find other ranking factors as the site have nothing so special, no big presence on any other social media channel, even the content isn't neither that much nor that great.

I might be wrong and there's some hidden pbns that's the main cause of the rankings, yes it costs a hell lot but still spammy AF!

What I'm sure of rnw is that blogspots and web2.0s won't be a reason for a penalty, so why not give it a shot?

Good research. The single wikipedia link might be single-handedly pulling some authority as Google gives heavy weight to these links. Apart from that, you should also check the Tier-2 backlinks of blogspot blogs and other web 2.0s. If a blogspot blog has DA 30+, it's as good as a standalone website.

How many pages does the website have indexed and how many internal links pointing to the page?

Spam works. Blasting a ecomm site right now with cheap ass coupon links from Fiverr. They're working lol. Google hasn't a fucking clue what they're doing. Spam is working so well right now it's actually pretty ridiculous if you've been in SEO a while.

Have a look, are those good as standalone sites?

All of those and more are pure spam sites with thousands of outbound links, no content but only keyword stuffing, nothing of any value there.

Is this an automated blast or one of the high quality manual cheap links services from the marketplace? Anyway, I really want to get to this seller :D

Most of the anchors are naked and branded, I barley find any kw anchor..

Those blogspots are just for the reason of spamming, all linking to eachother and to the money site. Keyword stuffing, 1k links on every single page, even the comments are open to anybody to spam whatever he wants!

I think of filtering the whole Rd list and start a marketplace thread for manual forum and blog comments :D

I also doubt that a single wikipedia link would give all the authority and traffic..

How many pages does the website have indexed and how many internal links pointing to the page?

12k pages, what brings the internal linking here? Anyway, every page has 62 internal links to other random pages with the exact same placements, all the pages link to the home page.

Yet people still argue the facts :D

Who said spam doesn't work?
Not me..

Do you really think it works in the long run?
Depends on how lucky you're!

LOL.
Those are indeed good-for-nothing sites.
There will be a few good links, you need to figure them out.

Those bad links could be added to camouflage the real links. Some sites do that always, so that their real links are not exposed.

Do you really think it works in the long run?

It really depends. You really need to know what you're doing through and through. What to cloak, what to buffer, what doesn't matter, what does, and so on. All though theres definitely a little luck, in my years I've seen sites that focused on all "white hat" techniques get dropped from the SEs and replaced by sites with spam. And vice versa. And the trends change. This year spam might be working for a particular niche and then in 1-4 years that changes and you're being out ranked by sites with topical siloing, YMYL content, established authorship, use of entities and blah blah blah. So when you're talking about the "long run" with Google, who the hell knows?

So it's really looking at the way Google is reacting to your niche by analyzing your competition atm.

AND

Having testing sites where you test links, on-site optimizations, technical optimizations etc etc where you can see how Google reacts to any changes is 100% necessary. I NEVER TEST on sites I care about. Never. You do one change at a time to multiple test sites and see if theres positive movement.

If the optimization moved all sites in a positive direction, well it's conclusive. I honestly only do one test site nowadays. But for those that are really into experimentation and spending a ton of time you don't need, have at it :D
