Will a Google penalty on a rootdomain affect subdomains?

Do subdomains penalties, indexing, keywords, and ranking affect each other? And also between the root domain?

The subdomain can be completely different from the main domain and any other subdomain in regard to content and indexing. Google does not associate subdomains with the root domain in fact Google treats subdomains just as it would a new domain.
