I see many sites in ahrefs gettings backlinks TO an image, not an image backlink where the anchor is within an image.

Does this have any SEO value whatsoever for a domain? since google crawls and indexes assets like images...

Also what about backlinks to other assets? say a .torrent file or a JS file? (i know it would be strange for anyone to <a your JS file lol but curious just the same.

It could be beneficial for the domain itself and its authority, but images typically do not rank. So SEO value is probably limited.

The infographic is one way of the good promoting and way of link building
but I find this article that maybe can help you to find out more:

im wondering though on a site-wide level.

A site about cars with many backlinks can eventually publish a long article about chickens and eventually rank with chicken site competitors because of its site-wide authority.

Do links to .PNG or .JPG boost site-wide authority PR like a backlink to a content page though or useless?

so it does do something? have u tried this?

if it works is it as effective as a backlink to a text-based content page?
I stumbled on a compteritors site with over 190 links to "Google" images on each google search so .fr / .jp / .it etc..the site barely has any traffic, NO blogs, maybe 3, but has a DA of 53...now that tells me these links do something.

maybe it helps rank those images in google image search and therefore it helps ranking your site there?

Google Image search is different than Web search.
If you only rank images, your images URLs might get all the traffic. For example: Wallpaper download sites.
Also google is not concerned about DA ranking.
So put article on .HTML page plus images and try to rank. That way you'll get traffic from image search as well as web search
