Is this why Google updates their algorithm?

what do you mean by "google updates their algorithm"

What did they update?

4 ads is too much, ruins the experience and is misleading for novice users

Instead of releasing these stupid updates from time to time, I honestly think Google should charge webmasters kind of monthly cost for crawling and indexing. That is win-win for them and us.
Charging for service opens the door of responsibility on them.

Giving a free service is less of a responsibility and you can hide your bad intentions behind the Free tag.

What we need is a strong competitor to Google to keep them in check and make them understand their place.

I agree we need strong competition, but google is quite big. For example, bing is owned by microsoft, one of the largest tech companies, and still they cannot compete with google.

Which is a shame. I like how bing doesn't fuck around every 3 months and their pretty light on the ads

Yup, its bad, they even lost the browser wars, the new microsoft browser edge is based on google's chromium project. But there is still hope, like duckduckgo, it just requires mass adoption.

Google is already doing lots of pushes and forcing a bad (or at least, worse than before) user experience, I hope that some day people will get tired of browsing in between the ads in Google and start using other search engines.

Only after that Google (but that applies to every big business that has a monopolistic-like behaviour) will start to focus on the end users instead of changing all suddenly with core updates and shuffling stuff, and seeing that they're losing some money they'll realize that there is some competition and they can't do all they want.
