Does Adsense "learn" and optimize itself really in this way?

Adsense has "auto" mode, that should find the best place where to put ads. I was thinking that process is pretty fast (put adsense on a site and in 1-2 months we will know the best RPM to get in that niche).

It seems the process is slower and sudden: I let adsense auto mode on a slow growing site (now 20k views/m) and I'm impressed by the RPM escalation.



The pic shows the last 10 months.
Site traffic has doubled but RPM isn't related to RPM, in fact august traffic decreased but RPM increased.

Shall we conclude that when we implemente adsense on a site we need to let it work for at least an year to let itself optimize?
