Are You Gay?

I agree. All the LGBTQ members (and moderators) should be able to express themselves freely without judgement.
Its LGBTQ+ for you Mister (or your appropriate pronounce), as someone who identify as Apache attack helicopter that was outrageous to not include us in that statement

I'm old enough to remember where the word "gay" came from and when it began to be used mainstream.

Yeah. That old.

Just like it became commonplace, we can change things and make this habit go away too.

For a long time it was natural to be racist and homophobic. It's never been ok but now everyone is waking up to what was happening before.

Let's seize this chance to change things for the better. We can't change the past, but we can shape the future.

Please just ban all mentions of sexual orientation and gender identity. It's no one's business, and also, no one gives a shit. I generally hate censorship, but I think it would be for the best.

TBH there's no need to mention any of that in a IM discussion. I can't even foresee a lounge discussion where that'd come in.

Banning or not, it should go away naturally. There simply is no context for it here anywhere that I can see.

Yet here we are

When the society transitions to being more polite, some people will always find it difficult. It is very good that people like you, who have been there before and after the change, advocate for being more polite towards our fellow human beings.

That being said, on a lighter note, the word had a completely different meaning in the past - it meant being in a happy mood.

Here are a couple of lines from William Wordsworth's poem about some daffodils he saw beside a lake.

A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:

I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

We still use words like gaiety - derived from gay - meaning, the state of being carefree/happy.

tl;dr: Be polite to each other, guys. Life is short. Enjoy each moment, as it passes us by.
