How do I claim an inactive/deleted username?

Hi, there's a couple of Instagram usernames I want but the accounts are either inactive with years or else they've been deleted. When I researched this online, I saw conflicting results online saying whether its possible or not. I have seen/heard of some accounts doing it so it's possible. Is it possible for me to take an inactive/deleted username? Thanks.

After an account deletion, Instagram waits for some time. Presently this time is about 1 month before giving a new username. You just need to check every once a while to see if the username became available. No black hat possible here I guess.

There is no waiting time, once created they are not deleted, same happens with PS accounts.

I suggest you just think of a unique username and not use the ones that were owned by others before. This way, you don't need to wait and saves you time figuring out what to do next.

Inactive usernames can be claimed using portals (they charge a fee) but deleted or suspended usernames are difficult.
