If I build a website with 800 articles, and comp is with 400~

According to the heading, i have no authority, but overtime, (the keywords are the same like the comp + new ones of myself) i would beat them with correct silo and little link building?
It is said considering, that some keywords are not that easy, but with volume of 800 articles i would beat the competition.
The content would be high quality.

If say a website has the snippet, after I will get recognized as the authority, i would take it away from him ain't it the case? Or is it lost for him?

Snippets don't seem to be completely based on authority, but who can deliver the best most compact information. If you take his snippet and improve on it, add more details while maybe shortening it even more, You might grab it from him with no authority at all.

Yep but he's doing a pretty good job
So I guess my advantage should be authority (which he already has, but I intend to outplay him in that regard)
 
the number of pages/posts no matter its content quality would never give the same boost as much as links could do, even at a 1:100 ratio with nice links,
such a tactic could work well with niches & keywords with low to medium competition, but not anything above
