Higher retention is better on all video lengths.
There isn't a fixed percentage for success, like 50% retention.
The algorithm update changed how views are rated, regardless of the retention.
It used to be that a view just needed to be 30+ seconds to be registered.
So botted views could just lump on a high volume of 100K+ views for 30 seconds to make content move up the rankings.
The update changed this, now the views need to also have an interaction to weight them.
For example, 10K views for 30 seconds will register, but won't have a desirable ranking effect due to no interatcions.
10K views for 30 seconds with 10K interactions, will have a desirable ranking effect.
The key is the view plus interaction weighting the view in the algorithm.
This weighting effect happens regardless of the view plus interaction happens with a 30 second, 3 minute, 10 minute view etc.
Yes, higher retention is better; 10K 10 minute views are better than 10K 30 second views; but each view has the same weight.
An interaction can be; comment, like, comment like, changing the playback from 1080 to 2160 HD, etc.
The point is the view source, and interaction source, need to match, for the algorithm to weight them.
This doesn't mean you need 10K views plus 10K interactions to move your content up the rankings.
For example, I am currently using a high volume of views (40-60 seconds) plus 30% interactions from the same source.
For every 10K views, there is 3K likes, from the same source. 30% interactions are enough to make the algorithm weight the views.

Update.
Currently I am having very desirable effects on my channel using this method.
High volume views (40-60 second minimum retention) plus 30% interactions coming from the same source.
For example, 100K views plus 30K likes from the same source.
The interactions used are likes.
No drops, 100% of the views stick.
The key point is no delivery for hours 0-6, I heat up the delivery at 8 hours, then peak delivery 12-24 hours.
At the time of upload I also post a community post; thumbnail of the video, plus link to it.
This encourages organic views to come in hours 0-6 before the botted views heat up from hour 8.
So a nice smooth ramped up delivery from 0-24 hours, high volume views, plus high volume interactions; organic comments and likes, plus the 30% botted likes.
At the 24 hour mark the delivery completes, then the organic views and interactions continue to make the content move up the rankings as they increase.
I just use 3 keywords; duplicated in the video title, and video description; and also the community post.
Before the video file is uploaded to YouTube, I change my video file name to include these 3 key words.
The algorithm then ranks the content with similar content, as it recognises the keywords in the video file, title, description, community post, all match.
When I say 3 keywords is enough, this is based upon a large channel I am chatting to that only uses 3 every video, and often has videos go viral; with all ranking very highly.
I have read a lot of outdated, and nonsense information on here regarding "keyword stuffing". This method does not work at present.
The algorithm now nullifies 15+ keywords used in video descriptions, so all keywords have no beneficial effect to ranking. 3 keywords is all that is needed.
The other factor which cannot be underestimated is I always upload on the same days, at the exact same time every week.
Monday-Thursday, 4 videos daily, 3.00pm daily.
Sticking to a regular day, regular time, will maximise gains. This alone has really had desirable results, compared to when I previously uploaded on random days, at random times.
Is uploading Sundays at 3.00pm going to make your channel blow up? No. However all the aforementioned methods are multiplied when used together.
Currently my subscriber growth, view growth, AdSense revenue, all all increasing steadily monthly.
So all is going well until the next algorithm update, which will inevitably cause problems as per usual.

One other important thing to note; keyword front loading.
By front loading, I mean make sure your 3 keywords are at the front of the; video title, video description, video file name, community post.
The algorithm seeks front keywords, hence why only 3 are needed. The first 3 keywords in a title are enough for the algorithm to identify the content and rank it with other similar content.
Using the same 3 keywords in the middle, or end, of titles doesn't have the same positive effect, as front loading those 3 keywords.

Channel statistics. Views graph.
See the graph below as an example of botted views.
The dips correspond with algorithm updates. However the graph quickly recovers and gains again.
With organic views, it takes longer for the views to recover after a dip due to an update.
With regards to channel statistics you are looking for constant even growth, rather than uneven growth daily.
Organic views aren't lumped on 1K, 10K, 100K, every day. Botted views are.
You will see the channels that have blown up are gaining artificial numbers which are even, such as 10K view growth per day, every day.
With organic view growth a video will peak after upload typically, then the views gradually decline with time.
The views don't stay constant at 10K per day, every day, etc.

No.
I monetised my channel within 28 days of starting it using botted views. 4000 hours of them. I also used 1K botted subscribers; in order to meet the monetisation criteria.
My channel now has 174 videos, 100K verified, total channel views now in the millions.
I have used botted views on every one of my 174 videos, and will continue to do so.
The only problem one has is algorithm updates, which can delete some of the botted views, interactions, and subscribers.
The algorithm can recognise botted views; but providing they are 30+ seconds, and also have interactions; they are registered.
My first channel in 2019 had 314 videos and was terminated by YouTube after one year.
Reason being I was pushing it to the maximum limits of growth using; botted views, interactions, subscribers, community posts, playlists.
Even after algorithm updates my gains were relentless, which kept being flagged by the algorithm as artificial manipulation.
So I learned a hard lesson what the limits are, and with this channel I don't push it to those extreme limits.
I am using 30% interactions, with high volume views, 40-60 second retention.
This does not get flagged by the algorithm as artificial growth, despite the desirable weighting effect of the views and interactions moving my content up in the rankings.
The other mistake I made, which I learned from; is I used to lump on a high volume of views 0-6 hours from upload.
Now I add nothing 0-6 hours, and heat up the delivery at 8 hours, peaking 12-24 until completion. I then let organic views take over 24 hours on.
This avoids the massive view gains being flagged by the algorithm as artificial manipulation.
The 30% interactions prevent view drops, as the algorithm registers the views as having interacted with the content.
20 months later my channels gains are consistent every month using this method.
My AdSense revenue has increased from month 1 month to 20 steadily. No problems whatsoever. My AdSense payment on the 22nd October will be my largest ever.
