Why do strong links often dip rankings before boosting?

When I build a set of strong links to a page it often dips down in the rankings for a while before shooting up.

What is this behaviour?

What is the advantage of this to the end user? If a page suddenly becomes popular and attracts links you'd want it at the correct position as quickly as possible right?

I've not been as involved in SEO over the last few years, although I used to assume it was a temporary safeguard of sorts just in case someone was manipulating their rankings and Google needed time to manually review the situation.

Is your website is new, As It is because Google measuring your website's and its content authenticity? And links authority before ranking top on the SERPs. It generally happens with every website. Don't worry, Just keep working on it. Sooner or later you will get results as per your efforts.

Noticed this issue starting last year after the devil's core update....I think is a descourging feature for people that are building link to their websites in order to manipulate rankings.

Olso this rank tank after building strong links can last from 1 month up to 8-9 months.....after this period your rankings will shoot up overnight.

Its does happen occasionally with me, but I haven't experienced it happening all the time.

I like to think of it like a fat man boarding a tiny boat. It will rock a bit but once it stabilizes it’s fine :p

I think it's a safety measure. If it would happen immediately, blackhats would know exactly what to do. This way google can somewhat obfuscate their inner workings.

Where are you getting these "rankings"? Are you looking at page traffic? kw traffic? Kw ranking?

I see before a page jumps it is usually is tested for a bunch of related terms. This will kill the over all pages average position.

Imagine you rank 5 for a kw on the page, then Google starts testing a bunch of other kws. Maybe they rank 8, 10 , 40. If you are looking at average position for the page, it will drop.

That patent would explain a lot of the behaviour I see.

Pretty interesting they fuck with you then wait and see what you do!

I see this all the time. Interestingly for new articles on established but not huge sites I find that the article jumps in high, then drops way down for a while before going back in higher. This sometimes takes 3 months to play out or as little as a couple of weeks.

Same for link building. Always a dip before going back up. Usually in link building it is days to weeks only from my experience but it is fairly consistent.

Google dancing...

It happens sometimes but not always.

They have so many things going on with their algo that they don't control it anymore.

i imagine this also would happen when you bulk link build over your "natural" link velocity and google is yet to determine the validity of your links.

Better to keep building in a conservative velocity not to make the algorithm suspicious and put you into this "probationary period"

I've experienced this a few times after pointing links to a few pages. I always drip feed the links and one page in particular dropped from #5 to position #89 and then up to position #2 in the space of a week.
