Do I name my domain more 'broad'? For example 'gardentools' and then I promote something specific like a gold shovel for or do I name a domain straight after a product I want to promote? Let's say I want to promote a gold shovel and name my domain 'goldshovel'.

How do you plan to grow the site? Through content about gold shovels, or with garden tools content too?

If the site is supposed to be just promote gold shovles then I would name the domain with those keywords and not the broader name unless you are going to promote a broader variety of prodcuts.

I would like to start with one product and add more products after some time and it's easier to sell a domain when the name is more broad.

If you go with EMD of a specific product, you would still need to invest in SEO and you might not rank for desired keyword, while broader name would give you a more room down the road and you could rank for other related keywords within niche which would at worst get you your money back in a year or two.

You could always build both, and then you have something to compare against. It will take you hardly any extra time to do the second one, if you are already working on the first.

Anyway, your niche reminded me of a song!

:D

Try not to pick a domain name solely based on a product name
It will limit your site's ability to cover more queries in future

I don't prefer creating EMD website. I suggest create something different. For example, if you are making site on Garden Tools then here are some suggestions1 Gardentoolsvilla.com, Thegreenyard.com but related to the main topic of the website.

If your adding more products later then go with the broad name. I personally don't suggest EMD Domains.

What will happen on this domain? Gold shovels as a souvenir or gift, or as a garden tool? It all depends on the context.
