.EDU Guest Posts - how to decipher the quality from the crap

I have seen some .edu "guest posts" that are $200 an article, and others that are $100 for 20 articles, lol. Some that are put on subdomains that have search engine friendly url's, and that look professional, and others that look like gibberish / spam.

What is a good strategy for filtering out the garbage? On one hand, I don't want to drastically overpay for the same service that others are providing for less, but on the other hand, if I end up with spam looking backlinks that google spiders never even look at it, it is wasted money anyways.

I am assuming I should ask for example posts before spending any money, but what should I be looking for with EDU's specifically?

Any tips are appreciated.

I doubt you will find any .edu guest posts that is actually posted on www-school-edu. almost all will be posted on sub-domains. students, teachers, alumni's usually don't have access to publish anything to www; only the admins do.

if you can get samples, you can figure out if the edu has been spammed to death or not.
