Had an SEO company ring me today trying to sell me thier service, after I had said I wasn't interested he went on to say they have a free SEO programm for people that didnt want to spend on SEO.

I gave him the time of day as i was wondering why they would offer such a serive. They offer 200 Directiry submissions, onsite guidelines and 20 themed links in the first month, then the next 11 months for a year build you 10 themed links a month for 2 keywords you chose. Im still thinking why they would do this, then he kinda jokingly mentions nothing in this life is for free and what they ask in return is to be able to host a discreet page on your site where they build links to some of their paying clients. I guess thats one way how they aquire the links for paying customers. He said they dont build more than 25 links a page. no dodgy links and if you do see a link you dont like just ring em and they take it down.

My question is, is there any way that this could hurt my ranking in google? I suppose if they linked some really bad links, or if it turned out to be some kind of link farm. I checked out there website, they have some preety big blue chip cleints and themselves rank page1, postion 1 for some big SEO terms.

What do you think? im thinking of going for it if it means another 10 back links a month.

cheers.

No body have any thoughts on this, could do with the advice thanks.

I think it would be hard getting the kind of backlinks he showed me. they are from active websites relevent to my themes. Not just blog posting, or forum type links.

If it cant hurt me in any way i'll go with it.

Getting backlinks to your site generally can't really hurt you...because if it could everyone would get 1000s of backlinks to their COMPETITORs sites to put them out of business. :D

It's the 'let us put some links on a discrete page' thing that would worry me. There's no such thing as 'discrete' on a webpage unless you exclude it in robots.txt...and if you do that the links on the page are no good for SEO.

Since this is a whitehat forum I won't mention anything you could do to neutralize the links...and if they know anything they'd spot it.

That said, if your site is 0 PR and doesn't rank for your keywords now, give it a shot for 6 months and see what happens.

DO NOT AGREE TO ANYTHING IN WRITING THAT YOU DID NOT ACTUALLY READ. You can find yourself agreeing to a visa payment after the first year/month/link if you just click an OK button without reading the 'terms'.
