It's very tricky. I would suggest to avoid if you are not experienced. Even if you find a good expired one with good backlinks, it would be good to rebuild it from the wayback archive as it was before and to start from there. Otherwise google could easily notice it's not the same content and will push you to the sandbox, it's deep and dark there.
True, that's why I mentioned it's good to know what you're doing. Not only you need to check the background of the expired domain, you also have to find a strong links, going to the root domain, not too specific and avoid bigger amount of links to the inner pages if you're not planning to rebuild it. Not an easy job for a beginner.Yeah, but if there is a good amount of links pointing to the root domain which are not too branded it can work without rebuilding it as far as I understand. From my own experience I will say that it is better to avoid. Then you can get a lot of problems.
