Is adding too many categories in blog harmful?

No, it's not. if you are planning to add content in future.

It is not if they make sense, can actually be good as you will look a lot more organized but I am no SEO expert. Just avoid overwhelming users visiting your website and make sure the UX/UI is solid.

Those are my two cents.

Any site needs to fit to it's own needs = as many categories as needed
neither harmful or beneficial, it just has to make sense

No, it's just to add more content in future. Audience will have clear structure about your blog.

It depends on the quality of your content... if you have millions of categories with gazillion crappy articles in it... it won't do any good...
Also be carefull with categories targetting the same kind of keywords...

The more categories = the broader your niche. Go for it if you are ready to compete big.

And never leave a category empty, or at least keep it unindexed until you post something into this category.

If your niche demands it, then go for it. Otherwise it makes no sense. You should always treat your categories like a menu. Just as you add sub-menus to organize your menu, you should add sub-categories to organize your categories. If there are a ton of categories only because you can't organize them, then it's a mess to deal with in the future.

As long as it doesn't confuse the users, it's fine.
You can set a dropdown menu for each main category to avoid clutter.

it's not... if your site contains more categories .. you can add more content to each of those categories and when people visit your blog they will spend more time on your blog by searching different categories.... obviously traffic will increase...

How much is categorized as many? 10 categories, 15 categories?

I think it's not really bad since the categories still in the same niche. Just look at Search Engine Land and Search Engine Journal.

I will prepare some articles first before adding category.

It is just for categorising the website and it's content. So, Put the categories as per your content requirements as when needed. As it also helps with structuring the website.

Good structure is a ranking factor?

Use as many as you like as long as it make finding content easy.

No, it's not. As long as they are relevant to your niche and you are planning to cover that category.

Make sure you manage them well and have at least 10 to 20 blogs in each category. Also, don't group unrelated articles under the same category. You can increase the categories on your blog.

You need to avoid thin content penalties.

If one category basically has one article listed just to get more pages indexed, then it'll likely trigger panda.
