Just enter your number when the merchant is asking while making a purchase.

Only if you agree to transfer money into the account holder bank, you can't just make a random purchase with it.
They would need to match up the transfer in with your account, and that can only be done with a ref.
You can also for some 3rd party services, get paid via it.
