Are Licensed BlackHatWorld Events a Good Idea?

I just thought of this,

@Diamond Damien could issue licenses to BHW members to organize IM conferences in their locality with some guidelines and stuff. It could be called BHW xCon, a follow up for the main BHW Con which people who are able to travel can attend.

how would quality control be regulated to ensure that the events were all set up professionally, the same message conveyed, a consistent level of quality (and attendance) maintained?

if any of those factors were lacking at a particular event then it would look bad on blackhatworld as a whole.

Sounds like a big job and also, the demand would need to be there. Unlikely to happen.

Yeah, I think taking a page out of how TEDx licenses events could help.

The challenges you mentioned are serious, the solution to it is money and a staff who vets the speakers and locations (through pictures sent) for each license issued.

To get money, all that is needed is sponsors. The organizers are mandated to have sponsors for their event. There are several companies that are willing to sponsor such events. The cost of the BHW xCon license should also be reasonable such that the organizers can make profit through the BHW brand.

This will result in a win - win for the organizers, attendants and sponsors.


The benefits of this are enormous. First, the number of new members it could draw will be mind blowing.

Secondly, it will fortify the BHW brand and make it a local brand.

Online webinars are cool but I will choose a physical face to face interaction with someone like @HenryObi , a Nigerian like me on BHW but I haven't met him. This physical meet-ups are gold.

A strong no from my side. BHW would have to choose someone as their official rep/head of the con and the likelihood of those people (in the locality) abusing their power is high. We’ve had members do shady stuff like promising nominations to exec and mod status in the official conferences and that itself was a pain in the behind. This would just multiply the chances of that happening several fold.

Branded events expanding to other regions can only work with local sponsors thats for sure. Unless bhw expects to establish satellite offices around the world. Once you covered sponsorship then qa/qc is easy with liaisons from bhw hq supervising.

Another issue would be the name itself, for example in my country wordings like blackhat, hacker, even geek aren't allowed let alone the nature of the event will be heavily regulated. Then whats the point, you already have a clean brand event "ungagged".

I think two options, platinum sponsors to carry the cost weight or crowdfunded and let bhw appointed event firm run it based on their guideline. A region specific requirement would be having a patron to launch the event, specifically for our region life is easier when the event is under the patronage of "excellency" or "royalty"; all your gov paperwork goes away, no security clearance, no censorship what so ever.

If anything goes wrong, then the local police would summon DD to deal with it. I don't think anyone would take that risk.

There is already lots of SEO events going on already just bit less over the virus problem so I don't really see point in BHW doing more of them overall.

For example next year I am speaking at Kyiv after a lot of Slavic women asked for me.
