Buying drinks for the fallen soldiers

What does sitting 13 beers out on a table actually do though?

I've always wondered why people do things which are symbolic, yet entirely useless.

At the end, all you would have left is a bunch of flat beer.

Would be better off donating that money to a charity.

It shows respect for fallen heroes. As I've stated in my last sentence doing little things might not mean much to you but mean more to others. Doing kind gestures might inspire people to be more kind to others. $100 wasted to you is worth more to me than $1000 contributed to a charity which will use 95% on officer salaries and 5% doing good. We all are different and do things differently.

Surely drinking the beer in honour would pay more respect.
If I die and knew people left beer sitting there I would be Turing in my grave.

I honestly can't stand this way of thinking, because it's extremely illogical.

That was my whole question... what are these 'little things' you think are actually helping?
Because wasting food or drink is not actually helping anything, but rather, it's adding to delusional thought, and also wasting food.

And no, not all charities are scams by any means, and it's usually easy to find information about their expenditures.
Heck, there are even some that help veterans, if that is what you prefer, and that's certainly better then wasting beer.

The only thing that is 'clear' is that you were not a fan of my post - but I don't care, because I wasn't a fan of yours either, and you posted this nonsense on a public forum, so don't be surprised when you find people who disagree with you.

Honestly, I'm more insulted by the wasted beer then your attempt at a verbal insult here.

Absolutely.

As mentioned before it is a tradition going back centuries where people leave a drink for deceased. It has nothing to do with wasting food / drink and has been done for thousands of years for a reason. I am not inventing anything new, this has been practiced in numerous civilizations. In some cultures people bring and leave a shot glass with alcohol on the grave of deceased on the anniversary of death. In same culture that I speak off people also give alcohol to "workers" at cemetery so that they can drink in the honor of the deceased. Just because you're limited to not knowing other cultural traditions you shouldn't talk negatively.

If you would've said you would instead prefer to buy 13 beers to 13 different veterans I would agree with you.

You must share the same Irish philosophy I was taught in my young days. I was told when I die all the drinks I spilled in my lifetime would be put into a bucket and my head would go into the bucket. I have not spilled or wasted any drinks since for most parts :)

Do you actually know what libation is?
Because it has absolutely nothing to do with letting 13 drinks sit out all night on a table next to military clothing.
That sounds more like something you'd want the psychic medium John Edwards for.

Besides that, justifying the act of wasting food by saying people have wasted food for thousands of years doesn't actually make any sense.
A tradition that involves wasting food should be long forgotten.

It raises awareness for one thing, so not entirely useless

How exactly is that not useless?

What does it accomplish?

You might as well all hold hands and sing kumbaya.

Raise awareness for something plastered all over the world news which everybody already knows about it?

Useless. And a waste of 13 beers.

It goes back many years hard to say when it was first started or done to show respect for the falling or people you serve with

A lot of people who go to these sorts of events often do big crazy work such as I knew about one guy who was a bomb inspector who lost both the bottom parts of his legs during the wars but raised like £200,000 to other soldiers.

When I was a shop manager I knew a retired Staff Sergeant he goes to these sorts of events quite often even oo he still works full time and he also looks after disabled older people for free outside of his delivery job .

Are you guys really hating a guy who symbolically bought 13 beers to his fallen soldiers, saying all he did is a waste of food? Have you ever been to a real war? Those guys were closer to him than his family. Maybe he could think up something else to show respect, but we are not the ones who have the right to judge. And, we don't know the beer was wasted after all.

Also, we do not consume beer in order to get needed nutritions for our body like the most food we consume every day, so wasting beer isn't as bad as wasting water or bread, I believe.

Better judge those fucking morons who are wearing bread as shoes.

You're 100% correct, some people got their feelings hurt when they heard that beer was "wasted". There is so much food wasted with no cause in USA every single day and they worry about some liquid being wasted for a good cause.

There’s always people who would say starving children in Africa could’ve eaten that beer or that table.
on topic : respect to every man who’s willing to fight for his God and country.

First you try telling me I never had friends, and now you are telling me my feelings are hurt?

Piss off.

Thinking your attention-seeking, self-gratifying drivel is super, super dumb doesn't mean my feelings were hurt.

Pat yourself on the back some more for doing nothing if that's what you want to do, but many people find this kind of stuff incredibly annoying, and as already mentioned, incredibly useless, because it doesn't do anything.

A lot of people who go to these sorts of events often do big crazy work such as I knew about one guy who was a bomb inspector who lost both the bottom parts of his legs during the wars but raised like £200,000 to other soldiers.

Sure, but that's not useless, and it's a very different scenario.

If sitting 13 beers out on a table hypothetically raised £200,000 for a good cause, nobody would be able to say anything against it.
But that's not what happened.

And that's exactly my point, that money wasted on 13 beers could of helped other soldiers, but instead, it was literally sat on a table and wasted when it could of been used on something actually beneficial.

I bet you they didn't spend that £200,000 on wasting beer and patting themselves on the back.

I just gave an accomplishment - it raises awareness. Now in the future, people who have seen this symbolic gesture will always have it in the back of their subconscious. Also, it helps the guy who arranged it since it probably helped his mental health.

What else can one man do with 13 beers that is useful? Get drunk and piss on the floor? Sure he can share them to help others feel better temporarily, but isn't that functionally the same as the symbolic gesture and just shorter lived?

What else can one man do with 13 beers that is useful?

It's not really about the beers. It's about the money spent on the beers at the bar.
There are quite a lot of useful things which could be done with the $50 or $100 spent on 13 wasted beers at the bar, such as donating to an organization which actually helps soldiers, buying a homeless vet some food or clothing, or doing whatever else.

I really don't understand how people can advocate for wasting money and food when that money could be spent on helping people.
