On my blog, following the H1, I have written an 'answer target' with the hope of being featured as a paragraph featured snippet(when the page appears on the SERP in 1-5 positions). Now, when I add a featured image to the blog, the image comes in between the H1 and my answer target.

Assuming everything else is good, would this affect my chances of taking the featured snippet?

Is there someone else in featured snippet on your keyword? If yes, then no your chances are low. If there is none, you can get featured if you are in first page of the search.

So, I was asking in terms of whether having an image between my H1 and the 'answer target' would lower my chances of being featured on the featured snippet, assuming everything else goes right

No it won't. I have featured images between my H1 and the answer target I want Google to show. And Google always picks up my answer target as Featured Snippets. So, a featured image doesn't affect Snippets.

You can also make your answer target stand out by bolding it. Sometimes, I have seen Google doesn't pick up my intended answer target but they pick a different set of sentences from my article as Featured Snippets.

Also, create an FAQ section for your articles. It has helped me gain Featured Snippets for a lot of long tail keywords

I don't know what your tag means, but the search results can take from anywhere on the page for the info featured in a snippet
