Actually spun content wont do that much great.
If your competitors are doing so, you too can use it effectively for competing, but in aspect of users, it is not much value in ranking.

If you are using spun content, prefer rewriting than to use tool.
Better spend your dollars in writing a medium quality article than to spin it.

I think spun content won't help you that much. It's better to edit the spun content for better quality.

I didn't think so. Mostly high quality unique content ranks and also boosts your site. But if you have less competition and also good tool for spinning, will help you little bit.
You need to use article spinning for right reason and right jobs. None of the tools will work well for article spinning which means that it doesn't create usable unique content on their own. so we have to rewrite the original seed article or we have to spin again and again to get readability of content. Its time consuming process and also not sure about our ranking.
Mostly prefer unique well handwritten content will help you more and also improves your site ranking.

I see lot of confusion regarding spun content.
So let me help you understand spun content.
If you spin a content and it passes copyscape and other plazarism checker doesn't mean it's not duplicate or spun content.
It still is!
So when google looks at your spun content it can figure out there's nothing new in it and it's a copy of other content , it's just "reworded".
So how much you spin it , rewrite it , rephrase it, reword it, para phrase it , it's still a duplicate content. There's nothing new, there's nothing of value for the readers.
I hope you understand now why spun content is still duplicate content. And duplicate content is a bad news for your website.
By the way the purpose of copyscape is to find out if someone is stealing you content not to steal someone's content.
Also don't fall for Quillbot para phrase bullshit. It's still duplicate content as I explained above.

Now this goes a little bit out of the scope of original question, but I have found an fairly reliable way to "spin" content. It requires a bit more effort tho. It's still faster than writing totally unique content.

1. Read the article with care and research the topics that are talked about a little bit. Just to get a handle on it
2. Spin the article, but also add new information to it. Something that original does not have.
3. Make sure the spun article is longer, passes plagiarism checks and does not target the exact same keywords (density, kw usage and order etc.)

Spun content shouldn't rank as per google itself but there are exceptions like all my autoblogs.
This doesn't mean spun content always ranks only in exceptional cases it ranks else it's a waste.
