That's whats so great about this method, even if they find out that the rumor isn't true, who's to say you're the one who started it?
You were just trying to help the consumer. I mean, "you came across an article on the web, and found out this product fell into the category of what was safe"
Take the Xbox thing for example. If the Xbox you're selling has a serial number starting with ABQ, then you're fine, because that's what the article that you "read" said was okay. See what I'm saying?
The articles don't link to your sales page, and your sales page doesn't link to the articles. It could have been anybody that wrote them, and you were just some poor soul who happened to read it, and then "discovered" that your product was one of the ones on the "safe list", so to speak.

This is too funny. I just recently launched this method for an affiliate product that I promote. I posted my last "article" for will-be searchers to find about 2 weeks ago, and then launched my "time bomb sentence" on my sales page about 4 days ago.
Want to know how effective it was? Two of my competitors are now using the same sentence on their sales pages! How funny is that?! I saw a pretty big jump in conversions for those 4 days (and still higher than normal even today actually).
It is a completely made up problem, but I guess they saw the sentence on my site, googled it, saw the articles and figured they should tell everybody that their product is "safe" too.
Now I just need to make it backfire on them...more on that to come for any of you readers. I already have an idea on how I can burn them, just need to clean it up a bit.

Lol! I did this with some diet pills (not on ebay, but on my money site) with all sorts of BS claims about the potential hazards of impure crap being used in the "mega brands" due to the fact that they all used the same supplier for their refining chemicals (and I listed all the top brands as potentially dangerous, then the oddball brand I was pushing (and ranking well for) and a couple others (that I had sites for) and kindly left my links for them to read about the problem because of their natural extraction techniques. I Did a few SENuke blasts of a BS scarticle (hehe new term) about the hazards of xanologic carcanimum (this is not the BS term I actually used, just an example of a made up word)... All I can say is, according to my scarticle, it would be amazing if anyone could still function normally in life if they consumed this made up crap!

My sales did go up a little but it could have been anything really. rotfl... just go on a smear campaign... Fire up your scrapebox or xrummer or whatever you got and go commenting all over the web with your "time bomb" phrase acting like some schmoe asking questions, "I heard xyzcompetitor isn't really safe at all like they claim... I heard it from {my friend|on the news|on this site hxxp://www.xyzcmpetitorscamexposed.c0m} that in fact this problem does exist with their product, what do you think? I'm really worried because I used it. My ass has been burning and my balls have been all red for the past week! I hear (your product here) is the only really safe one there is right now."
This is just downright old-school smear tactics but what the hell... they don't call this blackhat for nothin right? I don't think I'd get too obvious and drop your link, and I'd make sure the competitor link was not actually a link

@ Carson, Canuck, Kallen -> I'm really happy to hear you guys enjoyed this and have found uses for it. Makes me smile knowing I shared something that's not only useful, but is actually being used.

I actually ended up removing my time-bomb sentence from my site, wrote new articles that had the phrase in it, but talked about how it is complete BS and certain sellers are just trying to scare you...and you can tell if a site is legitimate or not because if they have the phrase on their site, they're lying about a made up problem to try and get you to try and buy their product instead of yours.
Then, it went on to say to make sure you don't buy from somebody who is even mentioning that made up problem. Here is a site that isn't just trying to dupe you by claiming false things, and is just an honest seller ->insert my site here<- (because I took the problem down, while the other sites still had it up)
As Kelso from That 70's Show would say "Double Burn!!" (I made sales they would have gotten when I had my "problem" up on my site and they didn't...now I'm making sales they would have gotten because they have the "problem" on their site and I don't...haha)

This sums it up. Instead of competing in existing markets your creating your own demand and then supplying a solution for that market exclusively. Very clever.
The likelihood of you even getting any competition if the short-medium term is also second to none.
Clever marketing or elaborate con?

I have used this trick to sell cooking equipment in the past and it worked like a charm. I would sell equipment more expensive than others on ebay. Create fear, worry. I would laugh sometimes how other sellers would not sell their equipment which were hundreds of dollars cheaper! I never created any fake pages out there though. I would just say something like, "this equipment passed the latest OS safety requirements. Careful, there are other sellers selling non-compliant equipment which could get your business fined by health, safety inspectors for thousands of dollars. Always ask your seller if their equipment passed July's (2 months ago) national OS safety test" (what a load of bs LOL). Man, I sold so much equipment on ebay it was not even funny! Equipment passed all safety requirements though.

As for you addition, it's funny you mention that. I hadn't actually ever spelled it out like that (I.E. - We're the only ones that have/do/aren't XXXX)
I always thought that it was kind of implied, but why not just spell it out like that...great addition!! Thanks!

after struggling to think of a good twist I came up with something. I have blasted a load of fake info via articles on a fake keyword so when you search for my phrase you get loads of articles basically validating that it is a legitimate term and in this case "method" for making money. Now I'm gonna promote (not sure how, maybe craigslist) and drop the timebomb in there to get people to do their own "research" LOL

They cold brew their beer, as most other companies do ... BUT no one advertised the fact.
They created a massive advertising campaign on how their beer was great because it was cold brewed ... yah de yah ...
Sales sky rocketed for about 2 years.
Sometimes you don't even have to make things up ... find something that is already there and taken for granted. What you might know about and understand, only about 1% of the population might know ...
If you can do that, find a true fact, be first to promote the fact, and more specifically the benefits ... you've got a some great marketing for awhile.
