How to Rank in Google for a Keyword

I've been on this forum for about 4 months now and have had a difiicult time understanding how to get ranked for a keyword

Lets say i want to get ranked for a keyword in weight loss niche - "how to lose weight"

My first step is to google adwords tool - The Global monthly Search volume shows shows as - 110000 (exact)

To check my competition , I go to google and put in the phrase mentioned above - Total Competition - 67,400,000

To check for exact competition i put in the phrase in " " and my competition shows as 2,060,000

my next step is to go and check the no. of pages and I find that there are 501 - 594 of about 2,060,000

my question is now - when a person searches for the term "how to lose weight" he is given broad results and not exact results..... what do i need to do to rank for the phrase in the "broad category"

First of all you may be trying a keyword that is saturated. The whole problem is that you just don't rank because so many others have more keyword strength than you.

The advice you need is how to build an interesting site and how to create link bait, keyword in the domain and how many times it occurs in the site. Everything else would be black hat I would imagine.

Use Market Samurai. There you can exactly check the top 10 ranked Google websites for your keyword.

A general tip. There's no chance for you if the top sites are aged, SEO optimized, high PR authority sites with lot's of quality backlinks.

On the other hand, if you see highly ranked articles, you can outrank them for instance by writing one too and submitting it to article directory. And then getting more quality backlinks to it than your competitors articles. The same goes for instance also for videos.

#1 you are competing in all search categories at all times. There is no way to choose which search format you are competing in.

But what ever term you are trying to rank for (in whatever search category -broad, phrase, exact) comes down to 3 things - On page SEO and Off page SEO (backlinks) and (partially) website age.

For "broad" search (after you've done your On page SEO) it is going to come down to how many backlinks with the anchor "how to lose weight" you have pointing to your site. The more backlinks, the better you are going to rank in the "broad" search. For "exact" or "phrase" you need fewer backlinks.

For the broad search "how to lose weight", the top site has over 4 million backlinks pointing to the main domain and almost 1000 to the page with "how to lose weight" in the title of the article. Now those links are only what Yahoo will show me - there are thousands more that don't show up for one reason or another, but you can bet Yahoo and Google knows about them.

If you want to rank for any term:
1. put the term in the title of your article (keep the title as short as possible) and sprinkle it in the article body a few times.
2. make sure the term is in the URL - usually putting it in the article title will do the trick.
3. get backlinks to your main URL and to the specific page targeting your term.

i suggest you start with a 200 to 10000 global monthly search demand for a more specific key phrases say 3 to 4 words.

and less than 7,000,000 competition.

Maybe a little clarification around broad and exact might help...

When you get data from the Adwords keyword tool for "how to lose weight" and you're looking at the search volume for broad matches, Google is showing you an approximation of how many times all of those words were included in a query...

For example that broad match search volume would also include these searches and many more:

how to lose weight quickly
how to lose weight fast
how to lose weight with acai
how to lose weight in 1 week
lose weight how to
etc, etc - anything containing the words: how to lose weight

whereas the exact match search volume is only showing you the search volume for the exact phrase "how to lose weight" - just those words in that order, hence the search volume is much lower.

There is no actual difference in Google's search results. There isn't an exact search result page and a broad search result page for a keyword, it's just the way Google categorizes the keyword data.

So if you created a site for the term "how to lose weight fast" and built a few thousand backlinks to it and somehow managed to rank for "how to lose weight" your site would be ranking for the broader term "how to lose weight" and not just "how to lose weight fast"

It is very hard to rank high in google for one keyword , today are 9999 like your site and you have the same keywords

Competition is damn hard in just one keyword... As the guy said, there are thousands of your competitors online and you think you can beat them fast?

Better to target long-tailed keywords. For that example keyword "how to lose weight", I can generate at least 500 longtails from Google Suggest with far less competition...easier to rank, and traffic is comparable. But that depends of course what CMS you are using, how many articles you have etc...

Would this be a good guide to follow?

• Pick a long tail keyword to rank for
• Google Trends show the term is searched for all year round
• 'Exact Match' traffic numbers of 100+ searches per day (minmum)
• sub 25,000 competiting pages?
• repeat, repeat, repeat
